The movie debuted in China with $48 mil, bigger than its two week domestic run.

Sort of. He gets a base pay of $21m + $1m for social media marketing + cut of profits. Unless Skyscraper goes bonkers in China I don't think he'll come away with $50m for that one.

Set in Hong Kong. Asian lead. I guess this is why there are more and more asian actors in films these days -- the Chinese market. It has to be. So much for well-intentioned diversity. Hollywood, I shoulda known.

Has anyone done a survey in China about such casting decisions for their market? If a film is set in HK it would be logical to cast people who look like locals no? Do Chinese people going to watch a foreign film expecting to see Asian faces?

S'funny, I've never entertained the notion of American movies as 'foreign movies', which of course is what they are outside the U.S. My stereotypical mindset about foreign films has always been that they were to be seen in a smaller artsy kinda theater and that they were produced by and featured people I didn't know. Certainly not the case with U.S. product outside our country!;)

Arnold was like a joke that got popular. If he had to write down his profession, I'd tell him: "Comedian."

My gut says Johnson will attempt some more "serious" roles down the road - and probably not too far down the road, too.

I think he has stronger acting chops than Schwarzenegger, and Johnson has already tried some more dramatic parts - like his role on "Ballers".

There's nothing in his IMDB listing upcoming that looks outside of his usual action/comedy oeuvre, but I suspect he'll "go dramatic" eventually.

Schwarzenegger eventually attempted more serious parts too, but those came well after his "glory days"...

There's been research, not really surveys. They also love Western culture so they tend to not care about whether or not there are Asian faces on the screen when there's a super star, but having recognizable locations and Asian faces doesn't hurt (and can help). Skyscraper was a little obvious with it's setting, random shots of the crowd, and casting Asian stars in supporting roles, though I'm curious if it'll have legs there. Apparently reviews there were also fairly average.

Agreed, quite possibly the worst movie he's ever been in!
