Below is the Wiki Definition, but you know them as more than a double side single, but smaller than a full Album.

They have enjoyed massive resurgence this century, specially with all the indie and alternative bands in abundance.

History shows artists from way before the Beatles did this:

My nomination, for now are two, the obvious:
Magical Mystery Tour by The Beatles.

The under recognized: Twisting By the Pool by Dire Straits.
    This will keep you cool!

    Your choices????

    Extended-play vinyl record
An extended play record, often referred to as an EP, is a musical recording that contains more tracks than a single, but is usually unqualified as an album or LP.[1][2][3] Contemporary EPs generally contain a minimum of three tracks and maximum of six tracks,[4] and are considered "less expensive and time-consuming" for an artist to produce than an album.[3] An EP originally referred to specific types of vinyl records other than 78 rpm standard play (SP) and LP,[5] but it is now applied to mid-length CDsand downloads as well.

Kwyet Kinks is easily one of the best, but I also love the “The Rolling Stones” EP - every cover on it is gold in my opinion, especially the top tier cover of You Better Move On.

Five by Five (The Rolling Stones EP

Five by Five is the second EP by The Rolling Stones and was released in 1964. Captured during a prolific spurt of recording activity at Chess Studios in Chicago that June, Five By Five was released that August in the UK shortly after their debut album, The Rolling Stones, had appeared. The title of Five by Five is a play on words—five tracks recorded by the five members of the band

This EP was released in Germany a year before the LP of the same title was released

Got Live If You Want It! (EP)
Got Live If You Want It! (capitalized got LIVE if you want it! on the cover) is the final official EP by The Rolling Stones and was released in 1965. The band's first live recording to be released, it was captured during selected dates at Liverpool and Manchester during their British tour in March that year. The EP was released in Germany in 196x with the order number DX2370 in a special "Füllschrift" cutting format. It contains the following titles: Page 1: Everybody Needs Somebody To Love, Pain In My Heart and Page 2: I'm Moving On, I'm Alright.

R.E.M.'s Chronic Town is fantastic, although I wish they had used the roaring Eponymous take of "Gardening At Night", rather than the wimpy one that they did (it's still good, though).

The Church had three - or maybe four, depending if you count the double-7" "Too Fast For You"/"Tear It All Away" as an EP or a double-single. Persia is my favorite overall.

Tommy Keene's Places That Are Gone is a good one. If it had just consisted of "Places That Are Gone" and "Baby Face", followed by 20 minutes of ducks quacking, I still would have nominated it here! (Fortunately, we still get four more songs in addition to those!)
