When I first heard 'If You Could Read My Mind' by Johnny Cash (recorded in American V), I was moved by his fragile vocals, specially around the mark 2:40. Until now, everytime I listen to it I get a lump on my throat, knowing that it was probably one of the last vocal performances of his life.

I get the same feeling with Summer's End by John Prine, from the album The Tree of Forgiveness, released two years prior to his death. Again, his frail voice touches me so much it's hard not to get emotional.

Do you have any other examples of elderly singers, possibily in the last recordings of their life, showing such fragility in their voice?

I opened this thread thinking Johnny Cash. He is mentioned in the first sentence. Total agreement with the OP.

Lee Hazlewood's final album Cake or Death (2006) was recorded when he knew he was dying from renal cancer.

52 isn't exactly elderly, but this is Townes at the end of his line in 1996

    A surprisingly good album.
I saw him in concert about 12 months before he passed, and it was quite stunning.

Dave Frishberg, who just passed away at age 88 last week, released his last record, a live duets album with Jessica Molaskey At the Algonquin in 2012 when he was 79. The world will miss his wit...RIP Dave
