Poll - what is the one song that should be shot into outer space to introduce aliens to EJ?

  3. Two different questions here, no? A signature song does not automatically mean it's someone most brilliant song.

"Candle in the Wind". Marilyn Monroe and Lady Diana. It's him. The drama queen.

For me it's a tie between goodbye yellow brick road and rocket man. Both amazing songs.

By a country mile my favorite album by Elton is Tumbleweed Connection but for me his signature song is "Your Song".

Crocodile Rock is my fav followed by Philadelphia Freedom.
That is based on the recordings not the underlying songs.
The best composition is Your Song

It's one of the top 4 choices for sure -- but which one?

Your Song will always be the one most associated with him in my mind. And yes, there's a difference between signature song and brilliance. Old Man or Heart of Gold would likely be Neil's signature songs, and they're nowhere near his best.

Most of those are signature songs.

I went with Your Song, but Rocket Man, Candle In The Wind and Yellow Brick Road are easily as good. Philadelphia Freedom is a fantastically constructed song. Levon and Tiny Dancer are lesser known gems. Bennie is a left of centre masterpiece.

How many Elton threads have I said all this on?

That was a toughie! I couldn't chose between "Rocket Man", "Bennie And The Jets" or "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"!

    Went with Rocket Man!

I don't think he has one. Too many that are equally beloved, rather like The Beatles.

I'd personally say "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", but it would probably be "Candle in the Wind" as it's one of the biggest selling singles ever.

  16. For his signature song I chose Rocket Man over Your Song..it was close though.
For his most brilliant song I'm choosing Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding.

The Beatles have "Revolution 9," so that's an easy one compared to Elton.

"Rocket Man" was the first song I really heard by him, and started me down the yellow brick road.

That said, "Your Song" is still his "Yesterday", "Piano Man", "Blowin' in the Wind", et al.

Exactly. Beatles, Elvis, Madonna, Eagles etc etc. When you have that many singles lodged into people's brains, hard to point to a 'sig song'. Always gonna be contrary opinions.

While I also probably wouldn't call it his "best" ever, I do think "Your Song" is the correct answer here.

FTR, my personal favorite Elton John song is "High Flying Bird" (beautiful tune that, among many!) :)

My favorite is "Yellow Brick Road". The answer is "Your Song".

I think with the Eagles, "Hotel California" would trounce all other candidates. The other three are much tougher, despite my earlier attempt at a Beatles joke.
