In the first series, Baldrick was the brains of the operation! However, as the years moved forward:-

The pivotal moment in glam music has arrived! We mentioned that glam was becoming softer and less glammier by thr time 1974 rolled around. Now, THIS is the moment when glam was shot in his head and began his agony. Top Of The Pops started a 1 month or so strike which gave way to MOR French pop and soulsters to claim the top position. The Sweet, Sparks, Slade or The Glitter Band had hits, but they couldn't reach the top spot. Glam's countdown to failure starts here.

I do like this Gary Glitter song but I agree that glam was now on its last legs, as Marc Bolan predicted 12 months previous when he released The Groover.
This chart is just not as strong as many of the charts we have seen over the past two years or so.
There was a strange 60's thing going on with R Dean Taylor (I love his two singles) and The Drifters. Plus bands like Mud, Showaddywaddy and The Rubettes were very retro.

I didn't realise Cliff Richard had a top 20 single this year. I thought these were his desert years until Miss You Nights brought him back to the charts.

I didn’t buy one of those singles in that top 30, which is odd as I liked many of them.

Whether I was using my ‘pocket money’ for something else, I don’t know. It’s unusual for me not to have any singles from the chart in this period.

Cliff’s hit was from his brief country phase, most notable for Honky Tonk Angel. This was the record that upon realising he was singing about a prostitute Cliff banned himself.:D

Scotland's World Cup Song at number 30, Roy Wood's Scottish-oriented hit single (he would have another hit with bagpipes by the time 1975 rolled around) and... yes, Charles Aznavour is next... Oh, and The Drifters first great hit in 1974, and the beginning of another great run for them.

From this lot, I'd have #2, 10, 11 (issued in the U.S. on RCA), 17 (just missed going #1 in the States) and 24.

A word about #14 which was something of a comeback (albeit concentrated in Britain) for a veteran U.S. R&B group because of whom a backing band for the lad who charted this week at #22, had to change its name to The Shadows. It was also issued in the U.S. on Bell, though it didn't do half the business it did in the U.K. The U.S. labels are shown herein (with a little difference in the A side title):

Whilst to some, this was one of the last Glam records of note, here Every UK #1 Single Of 1971 Discussion Thread with Marc's performance on Top of the pops, we have what some believe is the start of Glam Rock, still thrilling 47 years later.

Surprisingly, this comes from one of the latest editions before the strike. It was shown on the TOTP Christmas edition.

I'd never heard "Always Yours" and now after playing both clips it won't leave my head. Devious!

Gary almost goes full Elvis on the B-side.

Just give in and sing along.

    Always Yours
    Gary Glitter

I know, you know, I'll never, never let you go
Oh, you know, I know, I'll never, never let you go
    Always yours!
I know, you know, I'll never, never let you go
    Always yours!
You know, I know, I'll never, never let you go!
Oh, you will always find me here
    Cause I'm always, always yours
    Never known such a romeo
    But I'm always, always yours
    That's me! that's me!
    I'm still your blue-eyed boy
Please don't cry if I pass you by
    Cause I'm always, always yours
Please don't mind if I take my time
    Cause I'm always yours
Put me down if I run around
    Cause I'm always, always yours
It's no fun when I kiss and run
    But I'm always, always yours
    That's me! that's me!
I'm still your pride and joy
Take me home if I start to roam
    Cause I'm always, always yours
I got you and you got me to, and I'm always yours
I know, you know, I'll never, never let you go
Oh, you know, I know, I'll never, never let you go
Oh, I know, you know, I'll never, never let you go
Oh, you know, I know, I'll never, never let you go!
Just be cool if I play the fool
    Cause I'm always, always yours
    I'm a scream, I'm a teenage dream
    But I'm always, always yours
    That's me! that's me!
    You're sneaky, cheeky boy
Here I come with a special love
    And it's always, always yours
I've been round with the best in town
    And it's always yours
I know, you know, I'll never, never let you go
Oh, you know, I know, I'll never, never let you go
Oh, I know, you know, I'll never, never let you go
Oh, you know, I know, I'll never, never let you go!
    Always yours!
    I know, you know

Sadly with Gary you’re quite lucky if it’s just the microphone he’s pointing at you.

She is a song written by Charles Aznavour and Herbert Kretzme and released by Aznavour as a single in 1974. The song was written as a theme tune for the British TV series Seven Faces of Woman.

The song peaked at number 1 on the UK Singles Chart, stayed there for four weeks, and it was certified silver for shipments exceeding 250,000 units. It also reached number 1 in the Irish Charts, spending one week at the top. The song was recorded by Aznavour in several different languages aside from English, namely French and Italian, as well as Spanish and German. The song was less popular outside of the UK (where Seven Faces of Woman did not air); in France, the song narrowly missed the top 40, and in the United States, it failed to chart on the Billboard Top 100 and charted on the lower end of the easy listening charts.

ElvisCostello recorded a cover version of the song in 1999. This version, produced by Trevor Jones, was featured over the final sequence of the film Notting Hill and charted throughout Europe.
