David Killingsworth briefly replacing the irreplaceable Fee Waybill as vocalist in The Tubes.

From 1987-1989 (ish) he sang with them on live shows and a potential album that was never picked up by a label. He was originally in The Tubes back when they first came together but was sacked and ended up moving to Hawaii for years. Then when Fee left the band in 85/86 they got Killingsworth to replace him. His vocals are really really really bad, which is a shame as some of the material they performed and recorded was pretty good.

The Who’s work had taken a sharp nosedive in quality a good few years before Moon passed away.

Kenney very successfully ushered The Who into the 80's. No disrespect to the great Keith Moon.

Van Halen with Sammy Hagar instead of David Lee Roth (the songs went shortly later, not only was Roth a MUCH better singer and lyricist, but the melodies died from Eddie after one album - Roth may have been his muse)
and The Replacements with Slim Dunlap replacing the kicked-out, scapegoated Bob Stinson, who was so vastly superior....he wanted to keep it a rock and roll band....
Both bands died after a bit with trying to follow with these replacements, regardless of hits. Both went with a softer sound too....

Arnel Pineda -> (Steve Augeri -> Steve Perry.

    (Didn't hear Steve Augeri.)

Saw them in concert with Pineda; as precise a copy of the sound of Steve Perry as was humanly possible, but maybe too worshipful? Hard to express; maybe it's all just subjective.

The Staehely Brothers replacing Randy California and Jay Ferguson on Spirit's Feedback album. The results weren't horrible, but they were a steep step down from their previous heights.

Steve Holly and Laurence Juber didn’t really stand a chance replacing Joe English and Jimmy McCullough. Mostly though I blame Paul for not drawing off the power of the 1976 Wings band, with its newfound muscle, and releasing something smoking hot. Instead we got London Town. Sorry, off topics a bit.

Yes this. Thing is, I think Pete was the only one who really wanted to go that total opposite route with Kenny Jones. Not sure if Daltrey or Entwistle were totally sold on the idea. At the time they may have just gone along to appease Pete.

  20. Ah, they were different. I think that Pete adjusted his writing to work with Kenney. I think the problem was more expectations and some of the songs.

  21. They were certainly different. The album they made is a really good album just not what California and Ferguson would have done.

  22. Roth was a better singer than Hagar? Well that made me laugh. He's certainly a great front man but there's no comparison. That's not to dis Roth who get a great job with Van Halen.

IMO, Roth was a better frontman for Van Halen.

To me, it's not really Spirit without Randy at least, anymore than Squeeze is a genuine VU album. I kind of like Feedback and they almost manage to capture the Spirit sound, but overall the songwriting isn't there.
