Southern Comfort is *the* one. Ry Cooder's slide geetarr is stunning Deliverance takes discomfort to a different level Not sure I'm keen to see the other two....
I always thought that at the end of Southern Comfort they should head for the helicopter instead of the truck as there would be less chance of one of the Cajun baddies piloting it..
Ahh Rituals,....five doctors go out for a weekend in the woods for a little R&R ..what could go wrong ... just watched it again not too long ago......have to say that it's an overlooked under appreciated 70's flick.....you got Hal Holbrook, which at first, would seem unfitting for this type of film, "maniac in the woods" ..but just shows what a great actor he was. As great as Deliverance is,I think Rituals can hold its own...the cinematography, atmosphere, suspense are heads above any of the maniac/slasher films that were to come........for anybody in the NY metro area back in the day..I remember catching this on WOR's "Fright Night" Saturday nights @ 1:00 AM ....great times.
Southern Comfort was the best, but the subject brought to mind a book I read when I was a teenager (circa 1977) called Hunter's Blood. It was set in my home state of Arkansas, which, of course, instantly makes you think of backwoods yahoo's. It was a Deliverance rip-off, but I enjoyed reading it in my formative years. In the 80's it was made into a movie, starring Sam Bottoms, Clu Gulager, Kim Delaney, and the reliable Joey Travolta. I've never watched it, and from the trailer I looked up on YT I don't see any reason to.
Sad that for so long the only US version out there was a murky, mangled tv edit. Thankfully the uncut version is now available. ... Sad
