Japan : Branded To Kill - starring Jo Shishido excellent but strange at times film. I like any movie from this actor. Check it out. Directed by Seijun Suzuki

Sunrise (FW Murnau, USA, 1927). Sometimes, I think this is the greatest film I've ever seen. It's certainly the greatest SILENT film I've ever seen.

You and I both are probably going to have a hard time convincing others that this movie about illegal abortion in communist Romania is simply brilliant: 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days

I know that Cristian Mingiu has written and directed other excellent movies, but this is the one that I found totally engrossing. Six star movie - - - on a five star rating system.

Yes - the early quiet mystery is replaced with sentimentality (for the sake of the story, I suppose) but its comic turns are fun.

I also saw Graduation and have Beyond The Hills waiting to be watched, but 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days is something special.

Recently I saw a few films by Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, that also left quite an impression. The Past, The Salesman and A Separation.

    What amazing talent out there.

You should watch About Elly, another great film by Farhadi starring Shahab Hosseini from The Salesman and A Seperation as well as Taraneh Alidoosti from The Salesman. Two of the most talented actors ever. In fact the entire cast is amazing.

I also highly recommend the films of Majid Majidi, another master of Iranian film. Especially his masterpieces Children of Heaven, Color of Paradise and The Song of Sparrows.

I recommend watching the Korean classic Memories of Murder especially if you liked I Saw the Devil and The Chaser. Another newer Korean film I highly recommend is The Wailing, it is a horror film but don't let that put you off. It's really well done.

Some other dark thrillers/murder films I recommend are the Spanish films The Invisible Guest (Contratiempo) from 2016 and The Secret in Their Eyes from 2009 as well as the Indian films Ugly from 2013 and Raman Raghav 2.0 from 2016.

Also the Vengeance trilogy by Chan-wook Park (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Lady Vengeance and Oldboy) although I'm sure you've already seen them.

Cast my vote for "Danger: Diabolik" from 1968 starring John Phillip Law. Great concept, the much-later animated series was fun as well.

The Rules of the Game...just best movie, not best foreign movie... I was reading a book on the Oscars in 68 (blacking out on the title) and it caught my eye that Warren Beatty said that he didn't know a movie could be that good. I also saw White Night recently (1957ish) and it was really good.
There are three cubes of Polish movies, I think 8 each, though hard to find, that has some really great movies in it, red, white and blue, put together by Scorsese

While maybe not the best, my favorite is...Diva. I was just the right age for it, I guess.

Love Cinema Paradiso—my favorite film-ending of all time. For those of you who listed this film, do you favor the short or long version?
