I usually don't like collections of already released songs. They usually are just the director/producer telling you how good their taste is. I'm looking at you, Wes Anderson. The Harder They come is a exception. It was most likely just about everybody in the US's first exposure to those songs, and Jimmy Cliff played the role of a recording artist in the film, so it wasn't as contrived as trying to express the feeling of dispair with a Velvet Underground or Laffin' Lenny Cohen song. Another exception is the early John Waters films that featured sleazy rock & roll and R& b songs to compliment the low budget grimness of the films themselves.

I like original scores. Super Fly is my favorite. I also like Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, and That's the Way Of the World, though in the latter's case, I haven't seen the film. the Popol Vuh soundtracks to Herzog films are great as well.

  12. Anything by Ennio Morricone released in 1971! Such an amazing year for him artistically.

After that "Once Upon A Time In America" and "The Best Offer". Morricone is really the greatest film music composer of all time. With over 500 film soundtracks to his name, he's also the most prolific composer alive.
