I gotta feeling this thread will go awry, but hey, I'll give it a shot!

This is a discussion of "SCTV" characters who appeared at least twice but who weren't "major" - ie, no Guy Caballero or Edith Prickley or Ed Grimley, etc.

They can't be one-shots, but they can't be real regulars, either.

    Example: Lawrence Orbach (Martin Short).

I think Lawrence only appeared twice: "Mel's Rock Pile" and "Half Wits"!

Go to 3:00 for Lawrence here:

This would have been my first choice.

    But I'll add Dusty Towne.

Does 'Brock Linahan'* count? *Based on City TV's Brian Linehan. Martin Short is still funny; saw him on TCM last week with Dennis Miller.

Jackie Rogers Jr. appeared a couple of time. He was a funny character. Also Martin Short played that child actor who starred in "Oh That Rusty" a tv sitcom. He played the role for over 30 years, still pretending to be an 8 year old child.

As someone into video, I had to put in a good word for Gerry Todd.

Rusty is a great character but not recurring, IIRC. I think they just featured him the one time!

Wasn't Jackie one of the Short characters that he ported over to "SNL" as well? I think so...

Turns out Lawrence lasted longer than I thought! He continued into the Cinemax years... which I never saw because we didn't have cable! :sigh:

I couldn't remember the character's name so I looked on YouTube to find his name and I found a second skit that Short did as Rusty. Rusty did a commercial for a nursery school. It was a sketch that I had never seen before. I only remember the sketch where they were doing the faux documentary on Rusty. So there are at least 2 sketches featuring Rusty. I think Jackie Rogers Jr. was featured on SNL. I know that he did Ed Grimley on SNL. Martin Short was a great addition to SCTV and SNL

Yeah, that's all I know. I'm guessing the 2nd sketch you found was from the Cinemax days, like the additional Lawrence Orbach stuff I located.

The greatest tragedy of the cessation of Shout-issued "SCTV" DVDs isn't the lack of pre-NBC stuff - it's the lack of Cinemax.

The pre-NBC shows aired in syndication for years, whereas the Cinemax stuff hasn't gotten nearly as much play.

I honestly don't know if the Cinemax shows have played anywhere since the 80s! When I saw "SCTV" on cable later in the 80s, it was always the 70s-end of NBC stuff...

I keep thinking of hilarious characters only to find out they appeared too many times. Tex and Edna Boil, for instance.

But it's got me watching a bunch of SCTV clips which is never a bad thing. Funniest TV show ever without a doubt.
