Yes, I agree. At a first screening, the cumulative impact of Schindler's List almost forestalls an objective critical response, but upon subsequent viewings the (almost) peerless craft of the film becomes apparent. Almost irrespective of the subject matter, there are (many) sequences that are masterclasses in composition, editing, scoring and performance.

Indeed, one of the key criticisms of the film is that it is in English; however, Spielberg, who originally wanted to shoot in Polish and German, realised that subtitling the film would distract from the power of the imagery. According to Spielberg, “I wanted people to watch the images, not read the subtitles. There’s too much safety in reading. It would have been an excuse to take their eyes off the screen and watch something else.”

I really liked revisiting "THe Sixth Sense" after a fair amount of time from my first viewing. Knowing the twist didn't affect that at all, it was fun to watch specifically how things were set up to get to that twist. Also, regardless of anything else, it's a really good film.

Don't bother - there are so many things wrong with this version, I wouldn't know where to begin. I get that some foreign movies need some adjustments for American audiences - and this can be done very well, like "Let me in," the americanized version of "Let the right one in." "The Vanishing" just assumed its audience were idiots. I'm shocked it was done by the same director.

That's kinda how I feel around here every time "disturbing" or "shocking" movies are discussed. I've seen just about every film that gets mentioned in these types of threads, and none of them have ever bothered or disturbed me in the least.* I don't know if it's because I'm just totally desensitized, or because everyone else is simply a huge wuss. :p

*With the exception of the ones that depict actual cruelty to animals, which is something I cannot abide.

  9. Schindler's List

Too sad and depressing. I'm glad I watched it the ne time though.

    City of Angels

Not a good movie but I might have watched it again if not the heartbreaking opening where a child dies.

Any of the Jaws films after the original (although II isn't bad just even more unbelievable than the first).

Any of the Alien films after two although the third film has its moments.

The 2 Matrix sequels -- very bad writing and direction. Sequels that didn't call out to be made for a stunning film.

Any film by Michael Bay. I was forced to sit through the first two Transformers movies because my kids wanted to see them. Amazingly bad, bad films. Technically proficient for sure just bad writing acting, etc.

Although the technical aspect of this movie is amazing, 60+ minute continuous shot to start the movie, it is so violent and perverse, I'm good never seeing it again. The ending is mind blowing also.

Interesting, I hadn't thought of "a feeling of hopelessness". I've certainly seen some downers but would have to consider which I would decline.

I think that last time I really squirmed was during "The Killer Inside Me" when Casey Affeck's character murdered Jessica Alba's by repeatedly punching her in the face. :shake:

I bailed out after 30 minutes.

    I bailed after 15 minutes.

I bailed after looking at the poster.

I like how people are mentioning torture porn movies like they'd be something to watch over and over again, like a Disney movie. "I'll never watch A Serbian Film again". No crap. What did you think you were going to do? Pop it in for family get togethers?

Not wanting to watch notoriously disturbing films again is kind of like not watching Titanic again because the ship sinks. It goes without saying.

    sorry about the spoiler

Yep...I think this is an obvious choice. There are some films with a twist that you can watch again because they are fast paced. With the Sixth Sense if you know you know and it becomes kinda pointless. I have never returned for a second viewing.

"Moonlight"; a pile of boring, pointless and overrated crap from beginning to end.
If I want PC stuff, I'd rather watch a proper, well made movie such as "Eye in the sky"

After personally spending time with the writer of the film, you'd be surprised about how much of the core story is actually written by Stone.
At the time, much of his actual true story was mostly unknown. Jim's film was very hard to find, and most of everything was a bit of a mystery. Much of the story is inspired by several hours of audio tape Jim recorded just before his death. You would also be facinated by some of Jim's secrets that were left out of the film.

All in all, the story and script got "Stoned"

I can make a case that you really should watch it a second time, because it becomes a different film. The scene with his wife, eating dinner alone, saying "Happy Anniversary" is now heartbreaking, now that you know she's a widow.

The main impression I got from the movie and what I've read about Jim Morrison outside the film was that he was a drug addled, narcissistic jerk. I had some interest in The Doors music, but I found it pretty dark and the movie put the final kibosh on any further interest in the band on my part. I'm not interested in seeing any other Oliver Stone movie either.

  22. Apparently depictions of complicated, difficult relationships involving trauma and pain are "PC" if the protagonists are black and bisexual:rolleyes:.

I also think the film covertly works as a parable about children struggling with abuse or mental illness, in which guise the scene in which Osment tells his mother his "secret" is particularly moving. It's also beautifully made.

I'm confident M. Night has at least one more brilliant film in him, just because The Sixth Sense was so great. I watched it in the theater with no idea what the story was and was knocked out, and then saw it again and was equally impressed with how the same film could be changed so much by the knowledge I brought to it for the second viewing.

I have to turn away when the scene in Apocalypse Now shows the beheading of the water buffalo (?).

I didn't realize it was real...till afterward. That sealed it for me.

I'm not a blood and guts kinda guy unless it's comedic like Monty Python's "It's only a flesh wound"....
