My ordinary 1971 Capitol pressing also kills any CD version out there.

I wish you all could have heard the unissued DCC version attempt.

    Big sigh...

Steve, when that project (or any project) is aborted or rejected what happens to the unissued work? Is it destroyed?

It would be a real shame if "rare" Japanese Gold UHQR double rare bootleg copies of that appeared at record shows or something. Somehow, someone made copies of ATMP, and they sound really great... Who could have done this? There is no name on the cd...hmmmmm.

Steve- You criticized somebody earlier for taking 20 minutes to type one line. Now it's my turn. You started that post at 9:01 and it didnt show up until 9:22? Did it take that long for you to find the record and check to see what label it was on? :)

In this case, yes. Destroyed (in the presence of legal beagles).

Geez....You don't even get a copy of your hard work on that one!...That sucks!:(

    Destroyed...such a strong word. Final.

Thanks. I guess my real question was, how can the owners be assured these things don't exist after the fact. Now I know.

I also transferred an mint original US pressing to cd-r, but have not remastered it yet. I wanted to see if it sounded any better than the Japanese pressing, but I never had the time yet to sompare the 2. It's been a while, but I think I recall my initial impression was that the US pressing was slightly fuller sounding, and the Japanese thinner. I'll have to compare the 2 again.

Chris, I think that's exactly correct.

The Capitol LP sounds amazingly like the master tape.

But surely you kept some type of copy for yourself, didn't you?

    Sorry, no.

Get a Capitol first press LP set. It's very close.

:) Just a friendly reminder that there's no posting of boot sources on the forum.

    Steve,

I have a set with the poster of George inside. Is that the first pressing or did they keep making the poster for a few years?

Transferring this album to CD-R is just another in a long line of projects I'd like to do. Any tips you can offer on this title? I usually just do 'em flat.

I just bought a great condition ATMP vinyl too. How do we identify an original pressing?

Mine is Apple STCH 639. Does that help identify it?

We may have to decipher the deadwax. My copy has "#1" following the catalog number on side 1, "#3" on sides 2 & 3, and "#2" on side 4. I did not look at the "Apple Jam" disc.

My catalog number is the same as yours.

Bingo! That's the same as mine. Does this mean it's first pressing?

I'll second what Chris says about Mickboy-this guy is in it for the love of the music, not to make money. His "Exile" is indeed killer and here's hoping his projects stay small enough that nobody ever bothers him in a legal way.

I know George delivered the master tapes to Capitol -personally- in 1970. It seems to me that these early Apple pressings would be the best source of capturing not only what George intended but also the highest grade of sound of virtually any issue anywhere in the world.
The UK -1 would rival or be a close 2nd.

First pressings have custom green "Apple Jam" labels on the third LP. The labels of the first two LPs are standard Apple labels printed in orange.

Look at the inside of the lid on your box. Only first pressing boxes have the following printed at the bottom:

    "Manufactured by Apple Records, Inc.
1700 Broadway, New York, New York 10019"

Good luck with these pressings. I went through about a dozen really clean copies before finding two quality examples without pressing defects. I'm not sure if it was just my dumb luck, but getting those two copies was a bear.

Thanks Arin. I got it for $30 last weekend. This is the pressing Steve was suggesting, right?
