Yes, what I call orange is what others have called red. :)

Managed to find the Abba Greatest Hits Vol II disc a few days ago. I will confirm on this thread and the first press thread if I have scored an Orange / "Red" Face version

I was told when I got my "Live in '85" copy that it was sold at the various concert stops for the 1985 tour... I don't know if anyone here can verify that, however. That's one reason that I was always puzzled about the low press run-- anything that was being sold at the concerts should logically have been produced in much larger numbers.

FWIW, my copy came from a European dealer.

Agree. Though I don't know for sure, everything that I have seen suggests that the first 50 were released at the same time. Of course, the initial (1982) pressings all probably have machine stamped matrix codes, and gold tinted faces.

Any chance of merging this with the history of the compact disc thread -- we seem to have two different threads on the one topic!

My disc is indeed the "Red Faced" version some call it orange :)

The disc in M- condition matrix is 800012 2 01

text above spaced as it is written.

The Data side of this disc doesn't have the mirrored non data part that some of the early "Red Faced" discs have.

The sound quality is first rate.

    Simon :)

My red-faced copy of Super Trouper has the mirrored non-data section. I was surprised to see it. Some of my 5" CD singles from the late '80s are like that.

    Keith,

Thanks for the info, what is the full matrix for your ST disc?

David C and I will be comparing discs and in the future I will be putting together a list of Red Faced discs with info like the grouping of the matrix numbers mirrored or not and so on. I will be looking for a copy of this one :)

Interestingly I recently secured a copy of Eric Clapton's Back Trackin CD set catalogue number RSO 821 937-2 (disc 1 938-2 disc 2 939-2 ) and these were to my surprise a "Red / Orange" set !!
Their appearance is the same as the other Clapton Red Face sets I have.
The case is dated 1984 and this is the highest catalogue number for a Red Face disc I have seen to date.

    Simon :)

Ivan didn't mention this in his list. Anyone have the matrix for this first Abba CD, "The Visitors"? I'd like to check it against my copy.

    Well Done Simon!

Where did you find this set?

There must be a lot more Red/Orange face discs than we think!

I bought this from a fellow member here, I was very surprised when I saw it, dated 1984, it is very much one of the family of Red Face discs. It sounds superb.

I am beginning myself to wonder how many more RF discs have been issued?

    Best

    Simon :)

When CDs launched in the UK in 1983, Virgin Records tested the water with five titles from their catalogue:-

    Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
    Phil Collins - Face Value
    Human League - Dare
    OMD - Architecture & Morality
Culture Club - Kissing To Be Clever (not sure about this last one)

I remember walking into HMV in Newcastle upon Tyne and seeing them all lined up together on a shelf at the front of the store. 'Perfect sound forever' for £9.99 an album - factoring in inflation, that would be like, what, £40 or £50 in today's money?!?

I should clarify that the above were the initial roll out of commercial non-classical CD's in the UK for March 1983, not specifically Europe as I wrote in the post - hence, Abba being on CBS.
