First CD releases 1982-83?

Agree. Though I don't know for sure, everything that I have seen suggests that the first 50 were released at the same time. Of course, the initial (1982) pressings all probably have machine stamped matrix codes, and gold tinted faces.

 

Any chance of merging this with the history of the compact disc thread -- we seem to have two different threads on the one topic!

 

My red-faced copy of Super Trouper has the mirrored non-data section. I was surprised to see it. Some of my 5" CD singles from the late '80s are like that.

 

I have one of those Sony 101 players... and it still works!

When CDs launched in the UK in 1983, Virgin Records tested the water with five titles from their catalogue:-

Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
Phil Collins - Face Value

OMD - Architecture & Morality
Culture Club - Kissing To Be Clever (not sure about this last one)

I remember walking into HMV in Newcastle upon Tyne and seeing them all lined up together on a shelf at the front of the store. 'Perfect sound forever' for £9.99 an album - factoring in inflation, that would be like, what, £40 or £50 in today's money?!?
