Did anybody catch the newly restored "Metropolis" on TCM last night?
Of course it is also available on Kino DVD/VHS.
WOW, about 2 hours long (much longer than the Georgio Moroder version of the 80s). Definitive version? Probably. Still, I like the tinting of the 80s version, some of the rock music actually works well.
As a special treat 4 other Lang films were shown in a row (Blue Gardenia, Moonfleet, Fury, and Beyond a Reasonable Doubt.

There is some controversy over whether or not the recent Metropolis restoration as shown on TCM and on the DVD is being shown at the correct speed, but it is still the most complete version out there. I like how they used different-formatted subtitles to fill in the story gaps where they could not recover original footage.

It was interesting, but the film still is a big muddle. Did you see those streak marks at the end of each reel? That was weird. They seemed to be right on the Kino print (one of the new subtitles had it as well). Odd. I enjoyed it, but the original score was way too bombastic for me. Still, an amazing movie that almost (or did) bankrupt UFA.

Cool. Moonfleet was his only cinemascope movie.
