There is an alternate version of Silver Train that was supposedly recorded much earlier that has a few different lyrics than the released version of the song. I would have liked to see Criss Cross on the album and there are multiple outtakes of the song, some with horns and some without. I believe Who Am I and Fast Talking, Slow Walking come from around this time as well. I am at lunch at work and don't have my session books around to check.
Don't forget the cover versions they initially recorded when the album was going to be half covers..."Drift Away" in particular.
I believe that was the original plan for It's Only Rock 'N' Roll. One of the covers Ain't Too Proud To Beg actually made the official album . The original plan for Goats Head Soup was a half live half studio album if I remember correctly with part live tracks from the 1973 tour. One of the live tracks mentioned for inclusion was the version of Angie from King Biscuit/Brussels Affair.
I would love to see a three show slipcase/ booklet release from tours of 1970, 1972, 1976. Certainly if they are inclined film exists from 1972 and 1976.
There are quite a few bootlegs that mix outtakes and alternate versions from Goats Head Soup and It's Only Rock 'N' Roll.
Wait, didn't the Brussels Affair performance happen after Goats Head Soup was released? So I'm not getting how Brussels Angie was under discussion for inclusion on GHS. Or am I missing something?
It was mentioned in an interview with Mick Jagger at one point so I'm not sure. Maybe he was thinking of tracks left over from the aborted 1972 live album although Angie was not played on the that tour. Come to think of it, I think the first plan for IORR was half live and half covers.
Could be a logical means to finally release this one to the masses, since a lack of video hampers a From The Vault issue. Mark
Yep, I think I know the interview in question. Jagger said he wanted to include a live version of "YCAGWYW" as it was 'quite different' from the studio version.
My holy grail. I don't think it was recorded - I spoke with the owner of the recording studio they were staying/rehearsing at, and he said it wasn't. I assume he would know.
The U.S. "Got Live" LP did cull a bit from the '65 U.K. EP/Charlie March '65-recorded shows to fill things out, but the primary material on that LP was from several Fall '66 shows recorded on their U.K. tour that year - there's really not much overlap. In a year-and-a-half's time they had become a completely different live band, with a completely unhinged, anarchic sound (very much overdubbed - especially vocally - later in the studio prior to release of course). As was posted earlier, it would be fascinating to hear the complete undubbed Fall '66 shows if they in fact still exist (personally I have my doubts...)
I'm in! One of my favorite Stones albums, but I have to say I'm a bit skeptical that this is really true. I guess we'll see soon enough.
Goats Head Soup Deluxe? I'm in. Super Deluxe: Disc 1: original album Disc 2: outtakes (vintage) Disc 3: The Brussels Affair 2011 official version
I'm so glad I got all the existing iterations of BRUSSELS AFFAIR, especially the vinyl LPs from Japan, which are sublime.
I think it would be cool if the unissued Brussels tracks (afternoon or evening respectively) were included on a Goats Head Soup Deluxe release. Assuming the 2011 version is made commonly available also.
