I recently stumbled across the 6 disc box set anthology of
songs produced by George Martin. Every time I saw it
previously, it was pricy (~$100), but this time my
purchase decision was a "no brainer" because I spotted
    a used copy for $20 on half.com.

The set was compiled by Mark Lewisohn in honor of
the 50th anniversary of Martin's first recording.

The box is divided into thematic discs:

Disc 1: "Crazy Rhythms" (primarily 50s - jazz, novelty, and some skiffle)
Disc 2: "Transports of Delight" (primarily comedy)
Disc 3: "That Was The Decade That Was" (primarily merseybeat)
Disc 4: "Goldfingers" (primarily film scores and other orchestral work)
Disc 5: "Smile Of The Beyond" (primarly 70s work)
Disc 6: "Nice Work" (primarly 80s and 90s)

I played the discs a few times before I went through the trouble
to figure out the chronological order for the tracks. Not an easy
feat given the small printing in the book and my fading eyesight :)

    Real interesting stuff !!!!

Martin definetly had an interesting career before The Beatles walked
    into his studio.

As a Beatle fan, I found it very enlightening to hear this set.
Yes, it's pricey - but if you get a chance to buy it - I highly
    recommend it.

Below is my "chronological sequence" - and some song by song
comments... the numbers in front of each song are the
disc and track number (1.4 being "disc 1, track 4)...

The comments below a song refer to the song immediately
above it (or several songs above the comment)

I definetly prefer the chronological sequence - because it
shows how varied his career was - without forcing all of
the different types of music to sit together.

    DISC 1:

1.4 High Society - Graeme Bell's Austrian Jazz Band 1951
1.16 Won't You Come Home, Bill Bailey - Freddy Randall & His Band 1951
Two Nice jazz arrangments. For some reason, I'm reminded of
the "old Sgt. Pepper" jazz band at the beginning of the 1978 movie.

4.6 Barwick Green - Sidney Torch & His Orchestra (from "The Archers") June 1951
4.7 The White Suit Samba - Jack Parnell & His Rhythm August 1951
Very interesting production. Not sure how he got the "bubble" sound.

1.5 Princess Elizabeth Of England - Luton Girls Choir/Band Of The Irish Guards dec 1951
1.8 Ae Fond Kiss - Kenneth McKellar january 1952
1.7 Melody On The Move - Tommy Reilly/Vic Hammett Quartet 1952
    2.3 Mock Mozart - Peter Ustinov/Anthony Hopkins 1952
Very interesting "pseudo-classical" opera arrangement. I think I heard
"Alpha romeo" in there somewhere - LOL

4.1 Coronation Scot - Sidney Torch & His Orchestra (from "Paul Temple") 1952
4.3 Serenade In E Flat Major, 4th Movement Minuet - London Baroque Ensemble 1952
4.4 Serenade In E Flat Major, 5th Movement Allegro - London Baroque Ensemble 1952
    1.13 Away In A Manger - Kirkintilloch Jr. Choir/Joan Summers/Moira Anderson late 1952
4.5 The Lark Ascending - London Philharmonic Orchestra/Jean Pougnet 1953
4.9 Theme - Ron Goodwin & His Orchestra (from "Limelight") 1953
1.3 Hayfoot, Strawfoot - Kenny Baker Quartet 1953
Nice jazz quartet recording. Great trumpet.

    1.6 Romanza-Choro (Brasileirinho) - Roberto Inglez & His Orchestra 1953
Reminds me of Michael Kamen's work on Terry Gilliam's Brazil for some reason.

    2.6 Little Red Monkey - Joy Nicholas/Dick Bentley/Jimmy Edwards 1954
Very catchy little tune. Keep wondering what the instrument is. Reminded
me of "Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite"

1.23 Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine?) - The Southlanders/Philip Green & His Orchestra april 1955
    2.2 Unchained Melody - Peter Sellers 1955
    Bizarre - LOL

1.2 I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good - Cleo Laine 1955
1.9 Bluebell Polka - Jimmy Shand & His Band end of 1955
1.12 Arrivederci Darling - Edna Savage/Nuffield Centre Chorus beginning 1956
    1.1 Pickin' A Chicken - Eve Boswell/Glenn Somers & His Orchestra beginning 1956
    1.14 Robin Hood - Dick James/Stephen James & His Chorus/Ron Goodwin's Orchestra 1956
Yes, THAT Dick James (first owner of the Beatles publishing). Hard to
listen to without thinking of Monty Python (who did a similar sounding song
about a different person) or Mel Brooks... I'm sure this was a monster hit
    hit at the time.

1.10 Scottish Polka (Balintore Fishermen) - Mickie Ainsworth/Jimmy Blue 1956
1.17 Experiments With Mice - Johnny Dankworth & His Orchestra 1956
Absolutely BRILLIANT version of "Three Blind Mice" done in about 10 different
jazz styles. This one song is worth the price of the box alone.

    4.2 Prelude In C Minor Opus 28, No. 20 - Sidney Harrison 1956

    DISC 2:

2.5 Nellie The Elephant - Mandy Miller 1956
Catchy as hell. Find myself walking around singing this.

    2.18 You Gotta Go Oww! - Spike Milligan/Count Jimmy Moriarty/Graveley Stephens/Massed Alberts 1956
    1.18 Oi! Oi! Oi! - Joe Daniels & His Band/Butlin Campers 1957
1.25 Skiffling Strings - Ron Goodwin & His Concert Orchestra march 1957
    1.24 Don't You Rock Me Daddy-O - Vipers Skiffle Group 1957
The Vipers version of "Maggie May" is sadly awol from this collection.

    2.10 Any Old Iron - Peter Sellers/Mate's Spoffle Group/Fred Spoons 1957
Definetly familiar to anyone who's watched the Yellow Submarine movie - LOL

    2.4 A Transport Of Delight - Flanders & Swann 1957
    2.9 The Hippopotamus Song - Ian Wallace/Donald Swann 1957
4.10 Elizabeth Serenade (Where The Gentle Avon Flows) - Ron Goodwin & His Orch 1957

Yes, the song McCartney covered on "Run Devil Run"

2.13 All Things Are You - Peter Sellers 1958
2.17 A Drop Of The Hard Stuff - Peter Sellers 1958
Hilarious. Sellers at his best !

1.11 Dashing White Sergeant - Glasgow Phoenix Choir 1959
1.19 Saturday Jump - Humphrey Lyttleton & His Band 1959
    1.20 Crazy Rhythm - Max Geldray/Wally Stott & His Orchestra 1959
    1.22 Hi-Flutin' Boogie - John Scott 1960
    2.7 Goodness Gracious Me - Peter Sellers/Sophia Loren 1960
Probably a huge hit. Definetly something that sticks in the mind like
glue. Boom biddy boom biddy boom biddy boom biddy boo - LOL

2.8 The Wormwood Scrubs Tango - Spike Milligan 1962
2.11 The Hole In The Ground - Bernard Cribbins 1962
The instrumental backing reminds me of "I'm Only Sleeping" from Revolver

    DISC 3:

    2.15 End Of The World - Peter Cook/Dudley Moore/Alan Bennett/Jonathan Miller june 1962
    2.19 Morse Code Melody - The Alberts/Proffessor Bruce Lacey/Vox Humana 1962

I guess this is where the 1-hit-wonder band of I'm Too Sexy" fame got their name

    2.25 Football Results - Michael Bentine 1962
    4.8 Time Beat - Ray Cathode 1962
Note the name of the artist (a pseudonym for George Martin)

4.15 Dr. Kildare Theme - Johnie Spence & His Orchestra 1962
2.21 My Brother - Terry Scott november 1962
1.28 Sun Arise - Rolf Harris late 1962

    3.4 Hello Little Girl - Fourmost 1963
    2.20 I've Lost My Mummy - Rolf Harris 1963
Kind of puts an odd spin on Lennon's "Plastic Ono Band" album. Won't be able
to listen to that again without thinking of this song - LOL

    2.22 Judge Not - John Cleese/Tim Brooke-Taylor/Bill Oddie ("Cambridge Circus") 1963
3.6 The Cruel Sea - The Dakotas 1963

    DISC 4:

    3.13 Little Children - Billy J. Kramer/The Dakotas 1964
3.14 You're My World (Il Mio Mondo) - Cilla Black 1964
    3.16 You'll Never Walk Alone - Gerry & The Pacemakers 1964
4.20 Goldfinger - Shirley Bassey (from "Goldfinger") 1964
OK. I feel stupid for not knowing all these years that this
was a George Martin production. Great arrangment ! (but then I knew that already)
3.21 Ferry Cross The Mersey - Gerry & The Pacemakers 1964
    3.19 It's For You - Cilla Black Summer 1964
    4.17 Theme from "633 Squadron" - Ron Goodwin & His Orchestra 1964
    2.28 A Hard Day's Night - Peter Sellers (Richard III version) 1965

    3.23 I've Been Wrong Before - Cilla Black 1965
    3.15 Yesterday - The Beatles 1965
The string arrangment here is a little less surprising after hearing all of
the great arrangments Martin wrote for other songs in this set.

3.24 In My Life - The Beatles 1965
The only real crime in this set is the relatively small number of Beatle
tracks in the box. But the assumption is that people who buy the box
probably already have them all. So its difficult to knock that flaw.
I'll probably a few more choice Beatle cuts in my CD-R compilations.

    3.27 Michelle - David & Jonathan 1965
3.25 Land Of 1000 Dances - The Action October 1965
    3.26 Alfie - Cilla Black 1966
4.21 By George It's The David Frost Theme - George Martin Orchestra 1966
4.22 Love In The Open Air - George Martin Orchestra (from "The Family Way") 1966
2.27 The Highway Code - The Master Singers 1966
    3.29 She's Leaving Home - David & Jonathan May 1967
    3.30 When I'm Sixty-Four - Bernard Cribbins May 1967
Both of these are pretty much the same arrangments as those found on
the Beatles Sgt. Pepper album. Interesting to hear with a different voice.

    3.31 Time - Cilla Black 1967
4.24 Theme One - George Martin Orchestra September 1967
    Interesting sound. Very MMT 1967-ish

    4.23 Thingumybob - George Martin Orchestra 1968
No. Not the Apple single by the Black Dyke Mills Band. This is
is a previously unreleased version that Macca rejected for some reason.

3.28 Step Inside Love - Cilla Black 1968
4.27 Where Eagles Dare - Ron Goodwin (from "Where Eagles Dare") 1969
    2.1 The Q5 Piano Tune - Spike Mulligan 1969

    DISC 5:

    5.2 Icarus - Paul Winter/Winter Consort 1972
    5.6 Juniper Bear - Paul Winter/Winter Consort 1972
    5.4 Sans Souci - John Williams 1973
5.5 Live And Let Die - Paul McCartney/Wings (from "Live And Let Die") 1973

    5.8 Tin Man - America 1974
    5.9 Pinafore Days - Stackridge 1974
    5.11 Diamond Dust - Jeff Beck 1975
    5.12 Sister Golden Hair - America 1975
    5.10 Sunday - Cleo Laine 1976
5.13 The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress - Jimmy Webb 1976
    5.14 Amarillo - Neil Sedaka 1977
    5.16 Highwayman, The - Jimmy Webb 1977
    5.15 Get Back - Billy Preston 1978
Perhaps one or two additional songs from the movie would have
been appropriate. But given that its viewed as a disaster, its
clear why this is all we get.

5.17 (No More) Fear Of Flying - Gary Brooker 1979
    5.18 World's Greatest Lover - Cheap Trick 1980
4.26 The Ticklaw Anthem - George Martin Orchestra (from "Honky Tonk Freeway") 1981

    DISC 6:

    6.1 Ebony And Ivory - Paul McCartney/Stevie Wonder 1982
    6.2 Hymn - Ultravox 1982

6.7 Rosie Probert & Captain Cat - Mary Hopkin/Freddie Jones (from "Under Milk Wood") 1988
6.8 Mr. Waldo-Come And Sweep My Chimney - Tom Jones (from "Under Milk Wood") 1988
    6.9 Memory - Jose Carreras 1989
    6.10 Pinball Wizard - Donnie Kehr/Christian Hoff/Anthony Barrile (from "Tommy") 1993
6.11 Nice Work If You Can Get It - Larry Adler/Sting 1994
    6.12 My Man's Gone Now - Larry Adler/Sinead O'Connor 1994
    6.13 Rhapsody In Blue - Larry Alder/George Martin 1994
    6.14 Summertime - Larry Adler/Peter Gabriel 1994
I liked all of the Gershwin tunes. I must seek out the original album.
I especially like the version of "Rhapsody In Blue" here.

6.15 Pepperland Suite, The - George Martin 1998
6.16 Here, There And Everywhere - Celine Dion 1998
6.17 Friends And Lovers - George Martin 1998

It's worth getting for the 6 different Parlophone label designs on the discs.

I got it when it first came out and have enjoyed it greatly. I do think the sound is a little harsh. It's worth getting for the early oddball cuts that you'll probably not find other places. The package design is very nice especially the labels for each disc but the booklet is hard to read because it can't be removed. I hate glued in booklets.

  6. My favourite parts were the unexpected ones, like "Ray Cathode" and the Temperence Seven, featuring sonic genius John R.T. Davies on trombone. Also, NPR's late great host Karl Haas is on a track or two.

Thanks for sharing all the details! Mark Lewisohn usually does a fine job in compilations, even if the critics don't always get it. From a collector's standpoint, he usually does the right thing. Just a few comments:

This is a Brazilian classic. Martin was interviewed a few times by a Brazilian music paper editor who translated one of his books into Portuguese, but this song was never brought up.
I wonder whether Martin also produced the single B-side, which I think was "The Millionaire". This is an example of a song that is probably better known in Brazil than in its country of origin (or anywhere else, for that matter). A Brazilian group called Incriveis recorded "The Millionaire" as "O Milionario" and the tune became a huge hit for them, still played to this day. It is the same song, but the Brazilian group sped up the tempo and made the song catchier. Those who are into instrumental groups should definitely check it out.
That's interesting, because Martin didn't do the arrangement for the Beatles' version of "She's Leaving Home". He had another session booked, so Paul got Mike Leander (of Gary Glitter fame) to do it. Martin tells about it in his book "All You Need is Ears" and still sounds hurt by the fact that Paul did not wait for him.

Once again, thanks for this excellent post!

I've seen this and, almost bought it. Admittedly, for the price you paid, I'd have jumped at the chance. :)

Two questions: 1) Is Goldfinger in mono - hopefully the single mix?
    2) Are the Beatles tunes in mono?

Thanks for sharing your very thorough review.

Although I don't have the box...

I believe it has the standard Beatles mastering. So "In My Life" will be the 87 digital remix.

It's interesting to me how many Beatles songs are on this box set that are not performed by the Beatles! I wonder why this decision was made?

    3.3 Do You Want To Know A Secret - Billy J. Kramer/The Dakotas 1963
3.22 Can't Buy Me Love - Ella Fitzgerald April 1964
    2.28 A Hard Day's Night - Peter Sellers (Richard III version) 1965

I wondered about this too. Assuming Mr Martin and the surviving Beatles remain on good terms, I'd assume it's to honor their songwriting, highlight Martin's arranging/production creativity and find some unusual collectors' items. I mean, is there a market for this set who doesn't own the Beatles catalog?

    Please Please Me (mono)
I Want To Hold Your Hand (stereo)
    Goldfinger (stereo)
    Yesterday (stereo)
    In My Life (stereo)
    Live and Let Die (stereo)

I stored the whole set on my pc here at work as mp3 files so I'm really
not qualified to comment on the mastering... but I think its probably
good for what it is... some of the orchestral songs seem to have
some punch. My guess is there wasn't a lot of pressure from higher
ups to make the sound suitable for the masses...

    I still can't believe I wasn't aware Martin produced "Goldfinger" !!!!

The only thing about this set that I was surprised at was the lack of any cuts from the George Martin produced Time Exposure album by The Little River Band. Not only is it a great lp but it produced three hit singles. The Night Owls, Man On Your Mind and Take It Easy On Me.

It is great music. I wonder if some of this comes down to costs and licensing. It's hard to imagine it at Martin's level, but I've learned never to discount costs.

I've been thinking about what songs I would like to pad this collection
with when I eventually burn my CD-R compilation.

The Little River Band definetly belongs on the collection.

Suggestions about what songs to include are more than welcome.
I've been getting some private suggestions already.

I mostly want Beatle songs that spotlight Martin's involvement.

There are easy ones to think of like "A Day In The Life" and
"Strawberry Fields Forever" - but someone suggested "Money"
because of the piano played by George Martin.

Here's what I'm thinking of adding so far:

Money - The Beatles (for Martin's piano)
Hard Day's Night - The Beatles (doesn't Martin play the instrumental break?)
Slow Down - The Beatles (Martin on piano?)
Scrambled Eggs - George Martin Orchestra (yes - the LP was really labeled this way)
Auntie Gin's Theme - George Martin Orchestra (ditto about the LP label)
I'm Only Sleeping - The Beatles
Strawberry Fields Forever - George Martin
Sgt. Pepper->Little Help From My Friends - Beatles
Benefit of Mr. Kite - Beatles
Within You Without You - Beatles (instrumental version on Anthology 2)
Good Morning -> Sgt. Pepper (reprise) -> Day In The Life - Beatles
Goodnight - The Beatles (closing cut on The White Album)
Golden Slumbers->Carry That Weight->The End - The Beatles
Getting Better - Peter Frampton with The Bee Gees (film soundtrack)
Here Comes The Sun - Sandy Farina (Sgt. Pepper filmtrack)
Nowhere Man - The Bee Gees (film soundtrack)
Tug of War - Paul McCartney
    Here Today - Paul McCartney

Perhaps the Wildlife mix of 'Across The Universe'? It's George Martin's arrangement completely.

So how many versions of that song do we have now ?

    1.) Wildlife mix
    2.) Let It Be (spectorized)
    3.) Anthology 3
    4.) Let It Be... Naked

I prefer 3.) and 4.) and I probably prefer 3.) the most. I have it sitting
next to George's "The Inner Light" on a compilation I made - and that's where
I think it sits best... as the a-side of a single that never was... with
"Lady Madonna" and "Hey Bulldog" as another single that never was...

This is what I have so far... I'm undecided if I want the original Abbey
Road version of the Golden Slumbers Medley or the Music For Monsterrat
concert version of the same.... I'm leaning towards the concert version
because the guitar duel features McCartney, Clapton, and Knopfler with
Phil Collins on drums... plus that concert was George's project.

I can't remember what cut he did with Dire Straits but I think I
have the album. I also want to poke around my Merseybeat
stuff and see if any of it should be added. I know The Fourmost's
cover version of George Formby's "Auntie Maggie's Remedy" will fit
well... and I seem to remember a version of "America" from West
Side Story... and a version of "Que Sera Sera" (not Mary Hopkins version)
from 64 or 65 that sounds like "La Bamba"

There is also a version of the 'This Boy' instrumental that is only available in 'A Hard Day's Night'. It's more piano based than the one on the box set or the soundtrack. I like it better.

Great list but you can't neglect "In My Life" which was Sir George on piano (double speed) in the middle. One of his most touching and sympathetic performances on a Beatles song.

Also, I don't see Eleanor Rigby (Anthology version), in my mind as good or better than the arrangement for Yesterday.

"In My Life" was already on the box-set so no need to add it.

I'm on the fence about what version of Eleanor Rigby to include.

I kind of want to include the long drawn out version on the Broad
Street film soundtrack - but I'll probably go with the standard
    Revolver version.

I went through Lewisohn tonight and tried to find all of the tracks
that feature Martin playing an instrument. It's actually quite
an impressive list in its own right !!!

If I add *all* of them - the overall collection will prob grow
to 9 cds... I'll probably play around and see what fits.

But here's my latest version of the songs I want to add.

I'm definetly now in favor of the Montserrat concert version
of the Golden Slumbers medley - primarily because it features
Martin conducting an orchestra live in front of an audience
(a rare treat in and of itself)... and I definely need to dig
out my "Hard Day's Night" laserdisc and see what I think
of the actual filmtrack version of "Ringo's Theme"

I also need to add a few tracks from Macca's Flaming Pie.
And I think "We All Stand Together" is needed too !!!!
Big hit in the UK - great arrangement.

Maggie Mae - The Vipers (covered by Fabs)
Hey Liley Liley Lo - The Vipers (covered by Fabs in 1/69 sessions)
Misery - The Beatles (Martin on piano)

Not A Second Time - The Beatles (Martin on piano)

This Boy - The Beatles ("adjusting the notes" on vocal harmony)
Scrambled Eggs - George Martin Orchestra
Long Tall Sally - The Beatles (Martin on piano)

I didn't even know Sir George produced Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying, that's a terrific song ...

I remember watching Cruel Sea by the Dakotas performed on a U. K. pop TV show the day before I left England. The date was Tuesday, July 23, 1963. And that is also the date quoted as the first ever TV appearance by the Rolling Stones -- whom I also remember seeing on the tube, but I had not realized it was the day before I left; it must have been the same show.

That was a pleasant surprise.. Pretty neat.. The set is a very interesting listen, especially the early discs.
