Apperantly George Martin wanted to cut the White Album down to one single LP. Any guesses as to which songs he would have axed?

That is something people have been wondering for years, but i guess we will never know... probally all McCartney ballads, but one thing is for sure there would be no Revolution 9!!

I don't see how he could have axed any song as IMHO they are all gems including Revolution 9

The third Anthology would have been more exciting.

I'm pretty sure this has been discussed many times here. But it sure is fun.

Maybe there should be a poll, so all of us at the forum can have a version that is instituted by majority. It'd be fun and I would sure come back every day to make sure I got my vote.

Did Martin ever publicly comment about what would have made a single-disc lineup? I had thought I'd seen a thread about that within the last several weeks here, and figured it was maybe related to a recent interview disclosure(?). I even did a search for it just two days ago, having been too busy to check it out when I thought I first noticed it. But perhaps it was just my imagination...

As interesting as the conjecture of fellow Hoffmanites might be as to a single-disc tracklist, it's really only Martin's opinion that I'm interested in.

    Cool site.

I left off "Band On The Run" and "Crackerbox Palace", but kept "Goodnight Vienna". Go Ringo!

I think George Martin would have cut it down from 4 sides to 3 sides: A single album and side 2 of the Yellow Submarine soundtrack.

There has been endless speculation as to what songs would have been cut.

  13. I think George would have gone with this:

    Back in the USSR
    Dear Prudence
    Ob-la-di, Ob-bla-da
    Don't Pass Me By
    Junk
    Julia
    While My Guitar Gently Weeps
    Happiness is a Warm Gun

    Helter Skelter
    Piggies
    Blackbird
    I'm So Tired
    Not Guilty
    Sexy Sadie
    Goodnight

Junk or Not Guilty wouldn't have been on there IMO it didn't make the double one, and Birthday would have been definate because it opened side 3, Martin also IMO like Glass Onion?

I think George Martin's "displeasure" with the White Album extended beyond the fact that it was two albums worth of material. My interpretation of his comments is that I think he was also less than thrilled with the fact that many of the songs were either recorded individually or done in so casual a fashion. So, cutting the songs down to an album's worth, in my opinion, still doesn't capture what Martin was hoping for when they went in to record what turned out to be the White Album. I think he would have wanted them to really polish the material and then see what would work as a unified album.

Here's my take on a single LP White Album:

    side 1:
    Glass Onion
    Blackbird
    Piggies
    Dear Prudence
    Martha My Dear
    Everybody's Got Something To Hide
    Happiness Is A Warm Gun
    Rocky Raccoon
    While My Guitar Gently Weeps

    side 2:
    Savoy Truffle
    Sexy Sadie
    Honey Pie
    Julia
    Not Guilty
    Don't Pass Me By
    Cry Baby Cry
    Helter Skelter

  17. close but no cigar Javimulder!

I'd trash "Me And My Monkey" and "Helter Skelter" before "Revolution #9."

    try this:
    Martha My Dear
    Glass Onion
    Dear Prudence
    Blackbird
    Piggies
    While My Guitar Gently Weeps
    Rocky Raccoon
    Happiness Is A Warm Gun

    side 2:
    Birthday
    Don't Pass Me By
    Sexy Sadie
    Honey Pie
    Julia
    Mother Nature's Son
    Cry Baby Cry
    Long Long Long

Mojo has a white album anniversary site where various people submitted their 15 song white album lists (and readers can do so while entering a giveaway contest). One writer posted a conjecture of what George Martin would have wanted. The link is deceiving, as it makes it look like it was Martin's own list.

As long as Cry Baby Cry and Dear Prudence are included I'm very flexible about the rest.

Thanks. I figured George was too classy to secondguess the boys at this stage of the game, but I knew there'd been something to confuse the issue recently...

Well, he is on record as saying he wished it had been a single album, but as far as I know he's never opined as to which songs should have been cut.
