Well, I finally woke up and realized I missed the opportunity of a lifetime to get the Glenn Gould Complete Original Jacket box last year (unless I want to pay upwards of $1000 for it now). So, now I want to go back and start filling in volumes in Sony's Glenn Gould Edition. However, I cannot seem to find a comprehensive listing anywhere of the releases in that series.

Can anyone help? And, if anyone has the both the big OJC box and the complete run of the GGE, there's precious little discussion that I could find about the differences between the two (i.e., releases/recordings that are found in one but not the other).

    Thanks,
    Dave

I'd be interested in knowing more about this too; I have huge gaps in my Gould collection, although I think I have all his Bach releases from the GGE of around 2000; I'll have to check.

What puzzles me is the lack or archival/outtakes/new stuff releases since his untimely demise... Stipulations of his will, didn't he leave any unreleased stuff lying around, or has Sony dropped the ball big time?

As for sound and masterings, I think (but don't know for certain) there's nothing unique here, that the most recent previous masterings were used.

Whoops, I had added a link to a page that I didn't realize at first offered free illegal downloads of the material.

This page may help to decipher all the different Sony sets and releases:

    http://www.discogs.com/artist/Glenn+Gould#p=4&t=Releases_All

I did find this listing of the 71 cds from the OJC set and their contents. . . . The last two discs are bonus material I don't think had separate release prior to the set.

I wouldn't be suprised if there is a new boxset soon.

They recently (they being Sony) released the new Rubinstein box, and the Heifetz last year. They may re-do the Gould box at budget price.

I am trying to piece the puzzle together and will repost after I finish researching. I think there are over 40 releases in the Glenn Gould Edition and a handful of other Sony Classical releases with odds and ends. I think the Goldberg set "A State of Wonder" contains the interview on the 1st bonus CD you listed. The GGE has a disc which contains the orchestral version and transcription of the Siegfried Idyll, so I wonder if the second bonus is an alternate version or the same from the GGE.

You'd think Sony would make it easy - the discography on the 'official' page is unhelpful, to say the least.

I think that if one collects every volume in the GGE, one has everything that is in the OJC and more, just obviously repackaged (thematically or by composer instead of in Gould's original programs).

    You're probably right.

And after that you can collect the live recordings put out on cd by the CBC (I have two sets of those) and the performances on DVD (20 performances on a ten disc set. . . I'll probably get that one of these days. What an artist. . . .

One thing to keep in mind if purchasing a copy of the ORIGINAL JACKET box is that it was first issued with a defective disc, the volume of which escapes me. Buyers could request a replacement disc, but we have to assume that every buyer did not do this.

IIRC, it was the Beethoven Variations disc.

Defective disc #37 was the Beethoven Variations. The defect was two short white noise type sounds. I requested a replacement through an 800 number set up by Columbia and received it in short order. Now days, the entire box would have to be returned. The total price, at that time was less that $100 exclusively through Amazon.

I'm familiar only with the early 1990s reissues of Gould's output (Glenn Gould Edition). Have subsequent reissues improved on the sound or have we moved pretty far to the right of the decimal in terms of improvement?

I think the improvement since the early 90s editions is pretty substantial.

Wow, I didn't know anything about this, and I'm a huge Gould/Bach fan... Is there anything unreleased in these new remasters? I'm not sure if there was anything left unreleased in Sony's vaults after the last round of re-releases...

I guess they still don't include the infamous live Bernstein/Gould Brahms #1. It is included in the Bernstein Concerto box. An odd sounding disc as I believe it was mastered from an FM radio broadcast and sounds as if, warts and all.
