My family likes to watch scary movies on week-end, but most the ones we've tried on Netflix instant are pretty bad. Either boring 1960-70s movies or torture-porn (like Saw and Hostel) which we try to avoid.

I know that there are 100 bad horror movies for every Alien or The Shining, but perhaps there are some lesser known gems you'd like to recommend.

    Thanks a bunch,

    Alberto

PS We enjoyed And Soon The Darkness - the original British version. The Crazies was also good, as was The Thing.

This was trashed by critics, but I thought it was pretty creepy. It's PG-13 and only 85 minutes.

:righton: One of my absolute favorite films, love everything about it including the soundtrack and the cinematography, and the slow pace of this film is actually a plus, not many films i can say that about.

I just watched this with my daughter last week. We both really enjoyed it. It's not really scary though. Even though the character is a vampire, it is not really a vampire movie per se. There are a couple of slightly scary moments and a couple other disturbing visuals, but overall, it is good watch. Highly recommended. There is also another thread devoted to this movie.

Audition, but be warned, it gets pretty gory at a couple points (though it doesn't feel like exploitation).

Brad has the power to elevate awful movies into watchability merely by being such a great actor.

I streamed "Session 9" about a month ago and thought it was fantastic. It just checked and it seems its not streaming anymore. A shame because it was the best movie I found on netflix just by browsing around on the site.

It reminds me of the FDR Quote "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." he was refering to the Great Depression. But in this context it reminds me that even if there is nothing really there, Fear can shatter a human mind.

Maybe it will come back to netflix instant.

Session 9, Let the Right One In, House of the Devil and Exorcist 3 are all excellent recommendations.

A few more goodies that are currently available on Instant are:

    A Tale of Two Sisters
    Trick 'R Treat
    Dominion (Prequel to the Exorcist)
    Interview with the Vampire
    Creep
    Wilderness
    Blood Creek
    The Funhouse
    Isolation

"Let the right one in" is the original Swedish film, "Let me in" is the American remake. Both are truly excellent films, but I would NOT consider them family fare. The OP didn't specify they had to be family friendly, just thought I would add that info.

Actually a lot mentioned already is not family-friendly..... Albertoderoma, is this a consideration?

"Let Me In" was just added to the new films streaming on Netflix. Don't know if it's scary - I don't watch those kinds of movies, but it's there.

    "The new daughter"

A Kevin Costner movie a few years old, got really mixed reviews, but both my wife and I were really scared several times. It works when you are in the mood, lights out and its quiet...!!

As Mentioned, Let The Right One In and Let Me In are both excellent, although the original Swedish version is better if you don't mind the subtitles. You could also try some classics.

    The Innocents (1961)
    The Changeling (1980)
    The Others (2001)
    The Shining (1980)
The Woman In Black (1989) - This one is difficult to find, but a remake is currently in production with Dan Radcliffe and Ciaran Hinds
    The Ring (2002)
Don't Look Now (1973) Masterful, but not family friendly.
A Warning To The Curious (1972)
Rosemary's Baby (1968) - Again not one for the kids.

  24. Try this one...
