Google's taking a big step out in front of its music streaming competitors today. The company has just announced that effective immediately, you'll be able to upload up to 50,000 songs from your personal music collection and store them in the cloud through Google Play Music — all for free. The previous limit was 20,000.

I've finished uploading all the music i've bought since 2013 (13GB, almost 14000 songs), the system uses a match system so i didn't need to upload everything, pretty crazy. Still buying cd's but now they feel like the vinyls old outdated stuff. I might buy a galaxy s6 and with this service my music everywhere with me.

Cheap Apple only offering 5Gb storage only, nothing new.

Dam now i only need to rip my entire cd collection..........nahhh that's gonna take too much time better use a spotify sub.

Sounds very interesting ! Does it works with Flac files, or just the usual MP3/AAC crap ?

The 5GB of storage Apple provides has nothing to do with iTunes Match. However, I would like to see Apple match the 50K song limit that Google just started offering.

    Even worst Apple separate them.

THAT'S what I want to know. I don't have 50,000 songs, but I do have about 25,000 FLAC files.

I just tried it and yes, it works with FLAC. I'm not sure if it converts the file in some way in their storage though, and would it give you the FLAC file's sound quality on playback(?). Also I'm guessing that the upload will take longer with FLAC.

It converts FLAC to 320bps mp3s before uploading them. It does not store FLAC in the cloud. You can check this yourself, because it will let you download the file after it gets uploaded.

Edit: I should also note that converts AAC files to MP3 when they are uploaded

I've been slowly uploading there and I already knew I'd hit a limit at 20k. Nice to see that they've upped that.

Now I just need MS to offer a music locker service and then things will get really interesting...

It also matches as much as it can to their source prior to uploading so you won't be getting your version of an album either.

iTunes match needs to increase from 25K, especially if it's a paid service.

Well, there we have it. I guess it's a nice convenience when travelling, but it's not going to allow us to delete the original files off our HDDs.

Can they hold your stuff hostage, like by changing the terms of service on short notice in a few years time when their service is well established, and then ask you to pay a fee if you want to keep your files/login from being deleted automatically?

Only 13gb for 14000 songs? What format/bit rate are they?

I have just over 20000 songs at well over 300gb.

Yes because you can tell the difference between 320kps mp3 and flac files on a phone with earbuds...

Say you are at work reading this forum and someone mentions how cool that passage on one of the bonus tracks of Bitches' Brew is, you take your phone, press play and you listen to it.
Potentially you can do the same with Spotify but a) not for free b) not for all tracks in your collection including the most obscure ones.

What do they do? Throw a couple ads in-between songs? I'm trying to figure out how they make revenue, aside from some backdoor deal with your service provider about upping the amount of bandwidth that you'll have to pay extra for to stream your music.
