Just played disc three of Theatre 1839 to kickoff the weekend. I really enjoyed this release, and it sounds great! I guess I misspoke when I wrote that it's not one of the most sought after Pure Jerry releases. Warner Theatre and Bay Area 1978 seem to get the most love but maybe this one is next after those.
Livedownloads.com (which now redirects to the new Nugs.net) has them. EDIT: @budwhite beat me to it, sorry for the double answer.
Just watched the circulating video for 3-1-80 early show. Has to be the best 'Simple Twist' of all time. It epitomizes everything about Garcia's playing that I love. He is an endless well of melody throughout the performance. It's nice to have video accompaniment, even if a bit sketchy. This show is featured on Garcia Live Vol. 1 in addition to the late show. The Spring 80 JGB has something to offer every night. Even if the drumming is 'meh'. The joy in JG's playing is tangible.
Simple Twist starts @ about 35:30. Awesome,thanks-just what the doctor ordered on a Saturday afternoon. Early 80 was certainly a peak for JGB. Grab every bit you can find! Wish they'd release in full whatever they have for the shows featured on Way After Midnight.
Continuing on the same theme, a superlative 1980 JGB cover of a Dylan song, check out Masterpiece from 2/2/80, featured on Garcia Plays Dylan.
It's a great show. Jerry's solos in Mission in the rain are spot on. It's one of Jerry's best melodies. Love the song! And don't miss out on Dear Prudence
Russian Lullaby is another great melodic vehicle for Garcia in 1980 though you don't necessarily hear it mentioned as much as other tunes. The version on 3/1/80 is really awesome.
Got one last night, haven't opened yet but plan to today. Only 1500 pressed according to hype sticker. Of all places found it was Barnes and Noble!
Of course and I will post matrix. I assume also this is a repress of the White Vinyl RSD issue from a year or two.
Just played from top till end. Side one is fat, warm and full. Blows away my green Warner as far as soundstage. Some of the highs are tamed. Not a tick, pop or whoosh to be heard. Great pressing all around. Side two is more of the same, however, my original suffers from high end slur on The Wheel, really bright and distorted at times on certain words. This one is lacking that and has more of the mids featured. The new one sounds a little muddy to me only on that track and I dare say sounds flat compared to the rest of the content. It is a long second side so, I am listening to other albums as well to rule out igd on my end and not a choice of mastering or pressing issue. Side one sounded so good to me, I would say with confidence that it is worth it to purchase and upgrade. I've seen only a handful of this album in the wild and they have all been priced outrageous and inflated over actual condition. I miss seeing the WB labels, but really, who cares when this pressing appears to be better in soundstage, bass definition, and pressing - vinyl quality. A must have if you don't own.
Here are the matrix numbers as best as I can tell. All is handwritten. Side 1 MO 22581.1(3) JGFRR1005-A KAG@CA Side 2 M \/\ 22581.2(3) JGFRR1005-B KPGCCA
Beg to differ. Has the Garcia hand, the deal, the wheel, part of a woman I would probably call Sugaree. . . it's a good cover.
