Yes. I have listened to that show many times over the years. The new release a nice upgrade from the previously circulating sources. I never noticed any flubs, and I'm generally a pretty attentive listener for such things....
So really digging deep into the Jerry Garcia cannon lately. What are some of y'alls favorite Garcia & Kahn shows?
Wonder is Jerry's deeper purmutations like The Great American String Band or Reconstruction will ever get retail release?
I seem to remember Reconstruction being John Kahn's deal, like he has the rights, or rather his estate. Someone had some kind of correspondence with the Garcia people about it over the last few months. Maybe @Crispy Rob
10-16-85 Garcia & Kahn; Santa Cruz Recently came in the mail. The sound quality takes a huge tick up with "Jack-a-Roe" until the end of the show. And yes, the misspelling is telling of the dodgy nature of this release. (But worth buying/owning for Jerry fan attics.)
That's the one I was trying to remember when you asked about it. I really like the setlist on that one better than the prison show that's more well-known.
Yeah. It's pretty good. Jerry takes tons of leads and the tracks are long and exploratory. 12 tracks. 73 minutes. 6+ min "FotD." 6+min "Gomorrah." A nearly 10min "Bird Song." 7+min "Masterpiece." 7+min opening "Deep Elem Blues." A very nice listen.
My least favorite Garcia side-band but they need to figure that out and get some Reconstruction released
I do recall the discussion on Reconstruction. It seems that if Kahn's estate had the rights and the tapes, they would have released it by now.
I had a great 1970 acoustic set with Garcia, Hunter and David Nelson, back in the day. Good show. Great sound quality for the time. It was def a "One-off" type gig or radio show. Might have been a proto-NRotPS type combo. Hart & Kahn as rhythm section possibly. It was around 70 minutes. Arrgh. Description ring any bells?
That reminds me, there's also an almost-Grateful Dead acoustic set from '82 or '83 with Kahn on bass instead of Phil. It's from some benefit. I used to have it on cassette but haven't listened to it since the cassette days.
As far as I know Robert Hunter didn't play with Jerry in 1970. Maybe you are thinking of Jerry, David Nelson and John Dawson radio show/interview? Grateful Dead Sources: December 27, 1970: Radio Interview Maybe this is the one you are thinking of?
I'm not sure if that's the exact same one. I remember "Oh Boy" but I don't remember "El Paso" from the show I used to have. Maybe they did it more than once?
This one's been booted on CD for at least 20 years on various labels. Nice show, not mind- blowing, though. I went to all the Catalyst and Civic shows in town, but had a good excuse for missing this one. I was on the other coast getting married on the 19th. A friend who worked security said the rider list for that show included vodka, soda water and a case of Bic lighters. Boy, Jerry smoked a lot of Camels, eh?
