Wow. I can actually almost play that as I've been playing along with the album for decades. Almost playing it is one thing, but coming up with the parts is another matter altogether. Btw, I usually embellish this with lots of extraneous fret noises which I can't seem to eliminate to save my life. Is it any wonder I switched from playing to engineering early on?

  6. First 2 minutes is epic, the rest is pretty basic.

Great clip, very instructive. Jamerson's playing has always been a mystery to me. If you listen to the isolated track, he doesn't seem to be putting forth much in the way of volume, and his strings almost sound slack or de-tuned. Without knowing better, you would almost assume that that bassline wouldn't cut through the mix enough, but then you hear it with the rest of the track and it smokes! Really challenges my preconceived notions of how to be an effective bassist in a RnB combo.

It's amazing how it fits into the total arrangement. Isolated, it doesn't sound that good (not the playing, btw), but put together with the rest of the track, it's genius.

I always liked the bass playing on the Supremes 'Love Is Here and Now You're Gone'...

Not sure if Jamerson is on it, sounds like him, but I've also read that it was recorded with L.A. studio musicians. Carol Kaye? Was Jamerson considered so important that the flew him around for such recording dates?

"Friday"-the one and only Graham Maby (Joe Jackson Band)

Here's an obscure one that has been catching my ear lately. How many here are familiar with the work of Tony Bambach?

I believe that was the first single they cut in L.A., so I would guess Carol Kaye as well. Great song, regardless.

I love that, if you listen closely, you can faintly hear a Pete guide vocal from the tracking session.

I do apologize in advance, as this piece is probably not what the OP had in mind. That said, it is one of my favorite bass-centric pieces, AND when I went to YouTube to get a vid of it to link here, I found the vid to be quite entertaining.

For those that don't know, the track is Rubber Shirt from Frank Zappa's Sheik Yerbouti album. The piece contains bass and drums only, but reportedly, the instruments were two unrelated performances that were simply mixed together.

I love Patrick O'Hearn's playing. His upright bass solo on "The Ocean is the Ultimate Solution" is breathtaking.
