Radio KTmS i am a dj, i am what i play Thread Starter

    confusing thread title,
    i know...
    sorry.

but i think this theory comes from mistaking this band for that band when i was a kid,
but i've since refined it into a truism of sorts.
    they're not covers,
    or derivative,
    necessarily.

    for example:
'bad reputation' by joan jett is the best ramones song the ramones never recorded.
'lies' by the knickerbockers is the best (early) beatles song the beatles never recorded.
'angels and devils' by echo and the bunnymen is the best velvet underground song they never recorded.
'cherry chapstick' by yo la tengo is the best sonic youth song...
    and so on.
    any others?

stop me if i start making sense!

Giuffria's 1984 hit "Call To The Heart" could have easily been mistaken for a new Journey single.

Stuck in the Middle With You has been said to sound Bob Dylanish...I think it was wrongly labeled back in the early days of Napster and mp3 sharing. The song was attributed to Bob Dylan and has circulated amongst the mp3 pirates ever since. Ahh hurrrhhhhh

It quite often was back in the day. When I worked in a music store then, people used to mistakenly think it was Journey all the time.

"Long Stick Goes Boom" by Krokus sounds a lot like AC/DC.

I always thought that the Stones' "Star Fuc*er" sounded like The New York Dolls which is ironic, seeing as the Dolls were a sort of distortion/exaggeration of the Stones themselves.

this is a deep well . . . barry McGuire's "eve of destruction" somewhere is the annals of Rolling Stone is a feature article on how performers have been labeled "the next Bob Dylan" or the new Bob.

i don't know that it's a "great song," but fits and the tantrum's FOOLS GOLD sounds exactly like classic Hall & Oates.

I've always thought Dire Straits Brothers in Arms sounded like a Pink Floyd song, even down to the lyrics. In fact, I first heard it in a record store on release day and asked "Does Pink Floyd have a new album out?" Found out it was DS and bought it on the spot.

Daniel Lanois produced Series of Dreams so that's probably why it sounds very '80s U2ish

"See You In September" sung by The Happenings sounds like a Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons song.

"Suspicion" sung by Terry Stafford sounds an awful lot like Elvis, probably intentionally.

This is a topic which requires entirely too much work. Somebody is always stealing from somebody else! The obvious (and, sorry crew, we have to go back a few years):

Ozark Mountain Daredevils - "Jackie Blue"...The guitar solo is a wholesale ripoff of Stones - "Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)." Mick & Keith grabbed all the writing credits. Nothing for Mick Taylor.

The guitar work in Robert Plant's "Big Log" is the best Clapton imitation that you're ever likely to hear.

"I'll be Your Shelter" is Taylor Dayne's best Tina Turner impression.
