Yes, there are the Definitive and Deluxe and box sets recently released to give the "best" overview of a favourite artist. However, sometimes the original "Best of" seems to be the "one" for you for artistic or sentimental reasons etc.

What are some of your favourite Greatest Hit collections that have stood the test of time for you. One of mine is the original Best of the Buffalo Springfield from 1969. I think it has all the right songs for a basic Buffalo Springfield comp.

Simon & Garfunkel is the first which comes to mind. My parents bought it on cassette in the mid-70s, and I didn't hear any other S&G songs until about 5 years ago.

I still think its a definitive selection.

The Eagles Greatest Hits seems to be somewhat popular.

All originals. No remakes or remixes. Just as you remember on the radio.

Yes, but how is this a Greatest Hits? Aren't many of these remixes or rerecords?

If so they're not the hit mixes, so all bets are off.

I'm sure several have already mentioned this one, but I don't have time to go back and check:

This next one isn't technically a 'greatest-hits' collection, but...
