I work in a building that contains several radio stations. The classic rock station has asked for my help in compiling a list of proposed "Lost Classics" for a daily feature. This show features a "semi-forgotten" classic rock song (from the years 1967-1990) that slipped through the cracks and is rarely heard on mainstream radio these days. I thought I would ask the greatest collection of music thinkers I know: All of you. Suggest just one title or as many as you can think of. As an example of what they are looking for, here are a few "Lost Classics" from recent editions:

    Genesis- Trick Of The Tail
    Jimi Hendrix Experience-Gloria
The Pursuit Of Happiness-I'm An Adult Now
    Quicksilver Messenger Service-Fresh Air
    The Kinks-Juke Box Music
    The James Gang-The Bomber

Every suggestion will be considered. Thanks in advance for all of your suggestions!

I worked at a Classic Rock station that would concentrate on all 70's during the weekends. As a result we used a lot of deep cuts from artists. Here's a few from memory:

    Genesis-Squonk, Dance On A Volcano
    Sweet-Love Is Like Oxygen
    Jay Ferguson-Thunder Island
    Leon Russell-Tightrope
    Grateful Dead-Ripple
Steely Dan-Don't Take Me Alive, The Royal Scam
    Neil Young-After The Gold Rush

I love and admire a lot of the stuff mentioned above but if the station in question is anything like NYC's one remaining (lame) classic rock station they're not about to start playing the Flamin' Groovies or John Cale or Love -- classics they may be, but most of the audience has never heard these artists and probably isn't pining to. So I'll restrict my list to artists who are obvious classic rock staples:

    CCR - Ramble Tamble
    Zeppelin - Tangerine, Rover
Stones - 100 Years Ago, Torn and Frayed, Sway, Child of the Moon
Who - Mary Anne with the Shaky Hands
Neil Young - When You Dance...
Skynyrd - Needle and the Spoon, Curtis Lowe
Pink Floyd - Something from Animals (too long?) or Meddle
Cars - Since I Held You
Steely Dan - Any Major Dude

and I'll throw in Roxy Music's "If There Is Something," not because there's any chance that they'd play it but because I played it last night and was reminded how brilliant it is.

Ooh, I shoulda mentioned this one. Good Shepherd too. And why do I always hear CSN's version of Wooden Ships on the radio when the Airplane's is so much better (thanks to Jorma's wailing guitar and Grace's wailing vocals)?

Most radio stations that do "lost classics" are as creative as the rest of their playlists. In other words, instead of playing "A Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum, they'll play "Conquistador"! Your station is to be congratulated that it is actually looking for songs that fit the true definition of the term.

So here are a few you don't hear on the radio much anymore, that at least to me would fit a "classic rock" format, and very few of them are obscure:

    "Stealer" -- Free
    "20th Century Man" -- T. Rex
    "Gudbuy T'Jane" -- Slade
"Silver, Blue and Gold" -- Bad Company
"Take It Easy" -- Jackson Browne (!)
"Birth, School, Work, Death" -- The Godfathers
"Ah! Leah!" or "Love Is Like A Rock" -- Donnie Iris
    "Sweet Lui-Louise" -- Ironhorse
"I Wanna Grow Up to Be a Politician" -- The Byrds
"Surf's Up" -- The Beach Boys
    "Someday, Someway" -- Marshall Crenshaw
    "Stop Your Sobbing" -- Pretenders
    "Apeman" -- The Kinks
    "The Relay" -- The Who
"Holdin' On to Yesterday" -- Ambrosia
"See Emily Play" -- The Pink Floyd
"Steppin' in a Slide Zone" -- The Moody Blues
"Don't Ask Me No Questions" -- Lynyrd Skynyrd
"Wild West Hero" or "Night in the City" -- Electric Light Orchestra
    "Strutter" -- Kiss
"Ballad of You & Me & Pooneil" -- Jefferson Airplane
"Awaiting on You All" or "Wah Wah" or "Cheer Down" -- George Harrison
"Stupefaction" or "Endless Night" -- Graham Parker
"Hot Smoke & Sasafrass" -- The Bubble Puppy
"Evil Woman Don't Play Your Games with Me" -- Crow
    "Go Back" -- Crabby Appleton
    "Runnin' Blue" -- The Doors

A good question -- I was actually a bit unsure what the parameters are. Could you clarify, Strange Design?
