There isn't one without the other, and vice versa, but without hip hop, there wouldn't be the sound to write a verse...ta
Upon recently buying Warriorz and Firing Squad, I remembered how I first heard M.O.P (via a well edited YouTube classic): M.O.P "Ante Up (excerpt)":
El-P & K.M. cooked up a huge sound on this track (like most of the R.A.P. Music album): Killer Mike "Butane"
I read about this track from DJ Premier's Quarterpound Of Underacknowledged Hip Hop Cuts list (that synth bass line holds up well): Half A Mill "Any Day Can Be Ya Last"
Yeah. I was never a fan of Scott's Arabic sounding beats. lol Check this out.. (Since you're into smooth HipHop.)
I know many don't take Mac Miller seriously since he's your typical "Party Rapper" but I've always enjoyed this track. I love the mixing. So Premier.
This is an album that would benefit from an instrumental release. I'd love to hear a mixtape of these beats with verses from real rappers...
I don't know if I'm into "smooth hip hop" as a whole, but the Rick Ross "Supreme" and Beedie/Mac Miller "The Ill Spoken" tracks appealed to me because there was some kind of keyboard hook to go with the rest of the track. The Isaiah Rashad "RIP Kevin Miller" track, unfortunately, sounded a bit too generic...
His Tronic album has been a great purchase so far (the sped up Alan Parsons Project sample on "Losing Out" and this song in particular): With an assist from Jean-Luc Ponty's "Nostalgia," Black Milk "Bounce"
In Full Gear, as a whole album, might not have aged well, but the main single has for me: Stetsasonic "Talkin' All That Jazz"
His Black Elvis/Lost In Space album impressed me with its consistency: Kool Keith "Rockets On The Battlefield"
I saw Keith on tour for this album. Guy threw fried chicken into the crowd. At least I thought it was chicken. Who knows what planet that meat came from.
Time to give 9th wonder some shine. Seriously I would he say he's up there with Premier,Pete Rock & Large Professor.
