This thread is inspired by NPR’s list of the 150 greatest albums made by women (solo, band member, etc) which caused a lot of controversy. I personally think it’s quite a good list, of course not a definitive one, but they did a remarkable effort IMO.

    My top 3 would be:

    3. Ultraviolence - Lana Del Rey
    2. Juju - Siouxsie & the Banshees
    1. Pearl - Janis Joplin

Honorable mention: Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black, Donna Summer’s Bad Girls & Dolly Parton’s Jolene.
    What’s your top 3?!

Are you kidding me? They’re classics! 1971 was a good year for women in music (Blue, Tapestry, Pearl, etc)

Too hard to pick three for me (I also liked the NPR list)

But one particular jumps to mind:

I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You - Aretha Franklin; that's an album that would also probably top my list of greatest soul albums.

After that, I dunno that I could pick two from these:

    Hole - Live Through This
Mary Halvorson - Away With You
    Kate Bush - The Dreaming
    Patti Smith - Horses
    Beyonce - Lemonde
    Taylor Swift - Red
    The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
Norah Jones - Come Away with Me
Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville
    Joanne Brackeen - Ancient Dynasty

    Lauryn Hill - Miseducation
    Toni Braxton - Toni Braxton
Diana Ross - Everything Is Everything

Terribly daunting task but that's what I've come up with so far, I could've easily put any of the following there as well.

Diana Ross - Diana Ross (1970)
    Beyoncé - Beyoncé
Xscape - Traces Of My Lipstick
    Tamia - Tamia
Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved A Man
Minnie Riperton - Come To My Garden
Mary J Blige - Share My World
    TLC - Crazysexycool
    Janet Jackson - Janet.
    Janet Jackson - Velvet Rope
    Erykah Badu - Baduizm
    India Arie - Acoustic Soul
    Elle Varner - Perfectly Imperfect
    Mariah Carey - Fantasy
    Chrisette Michelle - Epiphany

I've been on a huge Soul/Neo-Soul trip recently, in couple months things will be different

I’d pick those two, but Lauryn Hill’s great too. And I agree - Aretha shows she is indeed the Queen of Soul on that album. A classic.

Yeah, my list keeps changing too. I could tell by your list you really like Soul music haha.
Your list is mostly made of black women, who are often so overlooked, but they have made some wonderful songs & albums. I forgot to put Donna Summer on my honorable mentions!

Yeah, this past week it's been non-stop 90's R&B girl groups. Which is funny because a couple weeks ago it was 60's pop.

Xscape (especially), SWV, TLC, En Vogue, Total, 702, Destiny's Child, Blaque etc.

    Just really love the harmonies.
