How can 30-year-old receivers sound better than new ones?

I have an Onkyo A10 in mint condition, and it certainly could use a tune up. It needs a good internal cleaning and a balance adjustment (one channel louder than the other). It looks and sounds really good and runs cool. I too have a place that could upgrade it - I know it could be even better.
