They should never have got rid of drummer Andy McCarroll. His replacement, Alan White, was too limp-wristed for that band and he adds a workmanlike plod that was absent before his arrival. After the first two and the b-sides compilation skip forward to 'Don't Believe The Truth' with Zak Starkey and then leave it at that. Some good tracks on the albums in between but not enough drive.

Yep. I have heard of the pre-masters floating around. They obviously could be released with normal dynamic range. If Noel would consent to an audiophile label tackling at least the first two...

The Supersonic single actually is. It was mastered by a different team with double digit DR.

    Tracklist:

    1. Supersonic (DR 10)
    2. Take Me Away (DR 12)
    3. I Will Believe [Live] (DR 12)
    3. Columbia [White Label Demo] (DR 11)

He said The Caribeaun Queen loved them. But seriously, I'd start with Definitely Maybe,
Then Be Here Now then Dig Out Your Soul.

supposedly he was sacked for being an appalling drummer, barely capable of recording the second album

??? Alan White IMHO is highly underrated. Tony McCaroll, on the other hand, had the workmanlike plod and played the same 'Supersonic' drum beat on every other Oasis song (Slide Away, Cigarettes & Alcohol, Rock 'n' Roll Star, Fade Away, Listen Up, Some Might Say (his last song with Oasis), etc).

Copied and pasted from the 'Rock drummers with most swing' thread:
    Rock drummers with most swing

It's a shame [Alan White's] drumming is usually hidden under layers of guitar.
I only took notice of the drumming when people made isolated instrument tracks from the Guitar Hero/Rock Band games.

Here's an isolated drum track from Wonderwall. It's highly likely that you've never paid attention to the drums prior to this video.

And while you're at it, check out the drum track from 'Don't Look Back in Anger' as well. I really like the fill just before the final chorus at [3:25].

Also, check out the 'Some Might Say' single for improved dynamic range.

I’d go for the first three albums and the b-side compilation The Masterplan.

My impression has always been that while McCarroll's style fit like a glove for the straight-ahead rockers that populate Definitely Maybe, the more musically diverse Morning Glory required a lighter touch and more finesse than he could probably muster, such that it was a good thing that White was on board for that album.

IOW's, each drummer was perfect for those respective records.

To me the band got better when Gem and Andy joined. They were better guitarist and songwriters than the original garage guys.

Shakermaker also, but not for the title track. I am not sure why:

    1. Shakermaker (DR7)
    2. D'Yer Wanna Be A Spaceman (DR10)
    3. Alive [8 track demo] (DR11)
    4. Bring It On Down [Live] (DR12)

And here is the Some Might Say single:

    1. Some Might Say (DR11)
    2. Talk Tonight (DR11)
    3. Acquiesce (DR12)
    4. Headshrinker (DR12)

I have no idea why these singles are this way. The album tracks certainly do not match.

I thought the first drummer was dreadful. I can't stand his playing on "I am the Walrus" for instance. Apparently, he earned 5 pence whenever he hit that cymbal.

Alan White, on the other hand, sounded more subtle and refined. On "Wonderwall" for example. I can't imagine McCaroll play that.

NB : Read the Boiledbeans post after I posted! I'd noticed White's playing even without isolated tracks.

I think Alan White is a good solid pro. Just wrong for that band :)

Follow the signs off the A1 to the Yellow car park. Once parked up enter the Metrocentre yellow zone, keep McDonalds on your left. Up the escalator and it's on level 1 pretty much opposite Primark.

Now Oasis is easily one of my top 10 favorite bands. I love Noel Gallagher's songwriting, to me he is the best songwriter of the 90s to present. I love pretty every album except SOTSOG, which to me has only 2 or 3 really good tracks on the album. if I had to rank the albums I would say that
    DM- 5 stars
    WTSMG- 5 stars
    BHN- 5 stars
    MP- 5 stars
    SOTSOG- 2 and half stars
    HC- 3 stars
    DBTT- 4 and half stars
    DOYS- 4.and half stars
    NGHFB- 4 and half stars
    CY- 4 and half stars
    AYW- 4 and half stars
As for the B sides I have not heard Cigarettes in hell, the fever, shout it out loud, or won't let you down, but I will definitely check those out. the other b sides that you mentioned are brilliant and cannot understand why they did not get a proper release on a studio album. But yeah, I just wanted to say thanks guys for all of the wonderful suggestions on Oasis's catalog, it's been a blast. Right now I'm in heaven with Liam's new album and Noel's soon to be released new album, it's s great year for Oasis fans!

Well it ended for mew when they thought it was a good idea to plonk the intro of imagine onto on of their songs. Bunch of plodders.

Even as a Blur fan, I knew they had created a classic with that song.

Footnote : I remember a lot of people got interested in this album in 1996 because it was produced by Owen Morris, Oasis' producer.
His soundscape is very recognizable, and this song is miraculous : I never liked Ash much, VERY inconsistent and often bland band, i didn't like them live either and yet this song...? Instant classic. Loved it then, love it now.

Let's be realistic : when people think Oasis, they think this era.
When Noel was possibly burned out and let others contribute to the songwriting, they became a different band IMO.
