Well, saying good things about Bill Inglot is a no-brainer....great guy, all around. But I would add Little Walter Devenne to that list, as an equal...he has truly gone where no one has gone before, dug up some really amazing, otherwise impossible to find tapes and long-forgotten groups. That, in addition to tracking down the best Time/Shad, Vee-Jay sources, King/Federal stereo, and consulting for Ace UK on their many hits comps over the years. Speaking of Ace, another fan's friend is Trevor Churchill, who has spent years scouring various UK vaults for copy tapes of US hits for which masters here seem to be lost forever. And, for his work during his tenure at MCA, a fellow you know well who needs no introduction...:)

I used to buy just about any CD with those 2 words in the credits.

There is no greater praise than that!

I actually stumbled onto this site while looking for information on Bill Inglot. I probably pay the light bill at Rhino every month with the amount of their products I buy.

Maybe Bill should have this thread forwarded to him. I know he doesn't do interviews anymore because of criticisms. He should know people understand his contributions and are grateful for them.

I'll betcha he's been here many times...He's always been elusive...Occasionally poping up in BSN, ICE etc...

    Hi Angel,

Thanks for posting this thread. We all tend to criticize. This is the perfect reminder of the contributions that Bill has made to the music we hold so dear.

And the constant stereo had worn Bill out, probably...remember, he's a collector as well, and wanted to start putting out the old 45 and Lp mono mixes because the stereo had become so rampant everywhere that history was being lost. I have quibbles every now and then, but overall, I like his approach.

Can't agree with ya on this one....The MONO reissues squashed the STEREO...A mono 45 version is great to have when it matches the original single mix...Not MONO for MONO sake and that's what it turned into. A shame because Bill is/was GREAT when he championed STEREO/MONO. It just got carried away...Hey, I own Hundreds of Rhino Cee Dee's and I always trusted the Inglot name when attached to a reissue back then.... Way back then....:)

Well, on Rhino, yeah...but not everywhere else, and I think that was the point. Why should Rhino follow the leader and keep issuing the same old stereo for the umpteenth time when they can use a mono source some collectors:rolleyes: want? And I don't know what you mean by 'mono for mono's sake'....what examples? The NUGGETS and SOUL boxes should be mono, as singles are what they're all about. And I haven't heard many complaints about his work on HITSVILLE or STAX/VOLT 1. Furthermore, Bill used mono mixes where he had no choice because they were often way different from the stereo(Rascals, Drifters)or had the opportunity to offer both(LOVE, DA CAPO). Personally, I wish he'd do more like that.

    ;)

I'm thrilled to have the STEREO/MONO versions of all my favorite singles AND I'll take Any outtake/alternate version I could get my hands on...
Heck, I'd love the sessions...I want it all.

I'd take more packages like THE HEADQUARTERS SESSIONS; something really unique. In this regard, Rhino hasn't lived up to its potential. They should be doing more like that.

I dont agree. Its the MONO versions of the hit singles that everyone was using, not the stereo. The stereo versions were non existant in the early days of CD.

Rhino was the first label to use the stereo mixes of a lot of those hits. Check out the Party Classics series...those were GREAT. Stereo "I Aint Gonna Eat My Heart Out"....stereo "Double Shot of My Babys Love", stereo
Laugh Laugh......ahh those were the days!!!

Yeah, no doubt. I listened to most of that earlier today for the first time. If they have access to these kind of tapes I'd like to see more album stories told this way. Really special release.

By the way, my Headquarters CD is numbered as one of the very last ones made. Got in by the the hair on my pasty buttocks.:) The day after I ordered it (thanks for the heads up Ed:thumbsup: ) it was listed as out of stock.

Who else does Rhino have this kind of access to?

Maybe Bill and company were using the opposite mixes than everyone else. Hmm.

My experience is that that falls into the category of gross overstatement. The majority of early reissues used stereo whenever possible and would sometimes go so far as to favor fake stereo over mono. There were exceptions, but in general, mono single mixes were harder to come by then stereo if it existed. In any case, whether making mono single mixes available on CD for the first time or unearthing the occasional rare stereo mix where previous comps had the track in mono or fake stereo, Bill Inglot has done a tremendous job in making sure that large chunks of musical history are both preserved and commercially available.

    Regards,

  25. Maybe it's time that Bill Inglot be given a special Grammy Award or something along that line for his major contribution for almost 20 years to the reissue and restoration of music from the 1950s, '60s, '70s, 80s.

    I'd vote for him.
