Cowabunga, dudes - let's hit the waves and pick our ONE favorite surf tune, instrumental style. Now, last time out our power pop lovers started getting a little too enthusiastic (and big ole laundry lists started appearing). Let's try this: ONE tune every hour per poster for you enthusiastic types (and no phantom accounts may be established to get around this).... This way, you don't swipe somebody's swell pick cause you got here first. I'm thinking that surf instros that sneak in a couple spoken words ala Church Key by The Revels ("Hey, open up in dere - who it is? The Revels!!! Oh, well come on in...") are ok to post. ONE TUNE PER POSTER PER HOUR! :) Ok hodads, polish up yer woodies and let's shoot the curl! I'm going with the ultra boss Inertia by the Hustlers, courtesy of Downey Records/DCC Surf Legends and Rumors. The most awesome, bone crunching bass and snare drums soundin' like they're ready to snap, w-e-t Fender reverrrrrrrrrrrrrb galore, damn I love that tune!!!

Naughty lad, Bradley....Indy said *one* tune...you gotta pick...for the Ventures, no problem for me: "Walk -- Don't Run," the hit that virtually invented the 'surf music' genre.

    But, that's not my pick...

It's a tough choice, as usual, there are so many....

Okay, Mike, since it's one an hour and I'm going to be around for a few more....

    Jack Nitzsche: "The Lonely Surfer"

The whole Reprise Lp is great, but this one sums up the drama, glory and grandeur of the surf mystique; and that great guitar work[Billy Strange? Tommy Tedesco?]: unforgettable, as well as that french horn later used to fine effect by John Entwistle on a few Who sides.

    Can't live without this one.

Balboa Blue--The Marketts. Not the version on Dunhill Beach Classics, which was probably the original, but the one released on Liberty.

One of my favorites (in addition to the aforementioned Mr. Moto) is Undertow by the Fabulous Continentals (CB Records). It's also got a really good rockin' version of Return to Me on the flip (yep, same song as Dino recorded).

I'll pick something closer to the current day - "Surfing and Spying" by the Go-Go's. They really knew how to ride a good surf tune, especially Gina Shock on the toms. I don't know of a better modern day surf drummer than Gina. Pretty tasty tremolo guitar on this one, too. Hopefully when they realize they have no shot at being relevent commerically on one of their upteen reunions, the Go-Go's will find their true destiny in albums full of surf tunes.

    Revels: "Church Key"/"Vesuvius"[Impact IX-1], 1961.

Remastered by Steve(this single mono), get the INTOXICA!!! CD(lotsa 1st time stereo) and really have fun!! Also the original home of "Comanche" from PULP FICTION(stereo for the first time!!!)
