He was a sad case who certainly got involved with the wrong woman. John Lydon speaks pretty highly of him.

Those songs charted as well as The Sex Pistols with John. Made some quids for Malcolm.

And I know Paul Cook and Keith Levene have defended him as well.

His problems clearly went deeper than that. I know Lydon likes to blame Spungen, but whatever dysfunction existed in their relationship, Sid is responsible for at least half of it. He was a violent, deeply unhealthy person, and that's not down to drugs or Nancy.

Lack of talent was another big problem for him

I think the Pistols sort of died once Vicious joined. Really, he was just the archetypal rock star which was everything the Pistols were supposed to be against.

No. On the Classic Albums DVD, Bill Price isolates Steve Jones's bass parts, and those are definitely not on a downtuned guitar.

That said, by the time the Pistols ended, Sid was decent on bass when he was sober, which unfortunately wasn't often. On YooToob, there is a great recording of the soundcheck at Winterland, and you can hear Sid playing fine.

But then he went and scored some opiates before the show...

I've read that "Belsen" was Lydon's song actually.

You mean to paraphrase Paul Westerberg who Tom Petty lifted that from after the Replacements opened for them.

  20. Well, the violence could be due in large part to the booze and drugs. My understanding is that he was generally a softie when he wasn’t drunk, but the thug came out after a few drinks, and that as time went on he was out of it more often than not.

Oh, I didn't know that. Poor taste or otherwise, that's one of my favourite tracks on the rather patchy Swindle. I don't listen to Sex Pistols for a dose etiquette and manners.

    Well done, Sid. :righton:

You might check out Sid's mother for being a precursor to the two you mention.

Whatever the punters might think of Sid's character or musicianship, he clearly meant a lot to John Lydon. This is pretty clear when John discusses Sid in The Filth and the Fury.

Well, most people who have alcohol or drug problems do not become violent in the manner that Sid did. Hence, it appears the alcohol and drugs exacerbated already-existing psychological problems rather than causing them.
