Is there a Steely Dan website with a list of who plays the guitar solos in each song? Some are easy to guess but others not so much! :D

I wouldn't mind seeing a list like that either.

I believe solos are credited on Can't Buy a Thrill, Aja, and Gaucho. Outside of that, I can tell you that Larry Carlton did Kid Charlemagne but I'm sure you already knew that.

I believe Denny Dias played the solo on BF.

The credits on the Decade Of Steely Dan CD said that Becker played the solo on "Black Friday."

I see there is little info on Countdown, time to break that record out again. "My Old School" was also on the Decade CD but I forget what the credits said there.

Denny Diaz never bends notes, and there are bent notes in the Black Friday solo. It's Becker, and credited as such in the Hal Leonard Songbook.

Thanks for the assist, pbuzby. It was Becker for sure, and in fact there's an interview where Dias or somebody describes the guitar Walt used. I want to say it was a Fender Mustang with "rusty strings."

Apparently it was Becker, but he used Denny Dias's Fender Telecaster from what I just found online. I had some of it right. :D

I could tell you who did each solo but I don't know if there is one place that will give you that information.

Steely Dan's Millennium Collection comp lists the soloist for each of its 10 songs on the back insert. I don't own this, but here's what I could find online to add to the others already mentioned here:

    "Do It Again," Denny
    "My Old School," Skunk
"Rikki Don't Lose That Number," Skunk
    "Third World Man," Larry Carlton
    "Deacon Blues," Pete Christlieb

I don't have my albums at the ready, or I'd do some more digging to contribute further.

anyone see that Classic Albums doc about Aja? (its streaming on netflix)

Fagen and Becker are in the studio with the tapes and they go through and play like 4 different solo versions from different guitarists for Peg (i believe, im blanking at the moment).

of course they were all amazing, but the one that was selected was perfect for the song.

    how cool is that?

...except that Christlieb's not a guitar solo credit, him being a sax player.

  23. And on a related note, Denny Dias plays the Coral Electric Sitar solo on "Do It Again" from the first album.
