James Stewart - Wednesdays in November

Wednesdays in November are "All Jimmy, All Day", starting this morning with his first screen appearance ("The Murder Man", 1935).

I've seen nearly all 57, with this is a great chance to fill a few gaps and to rewatch some great movies featuring a wonderful actor.

No I don't work for TCM or the Stewart Estate. :)

One of my favorite actors. Film Forum in NYC is currently running a festival called "Hank and Jimmy", covering the films made by longtime friends Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda, tied into a recent book about their friendship and careers.

Proud to own 17 of his films on DVD, and Blu-ray. Criterion's The Philadelphia Story being the next release.

"The Philadelphia Story" is very near the top of my personal JS list.

I've seen the obvious Stewart flicks (Wonderful Life, Rear Window, etc.), but can any of you recommend some more obscure gems? Thanks.

Today's TCM crop is entirely from the 1930s, so Jimmy is in a supporting role in a number of them.

"Made For Each Other", IMO, qualifies as an obscure gem.

"Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" and "Destry Rides Again" are both classic films that are fairly well-known, but get a little less attention than the ones you mentioned.

"Wife vs. Secretary" and "The Last Gangster" are smaller roles for Jimmy, but it's cool to see him in the same film as Gable and Eddie G., respectively.

Jimmy Stewart was the man, especially in westerns because he seemed almost too nice to actually shoot someone, but he was one of the toughest cowboys on the silver screen.

Well said. This duality is most evident, IMO, in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance". That film raises ethical questions about violence and attempting to "live in peace" that still resonate. I'm no fan of John Wayne, but he's perfectly cast in that film as well.

I just caught Stewart's first film ("Murder Man") on TCM On Demand. It's one of the handful of his I had never seen. For a "B" picture, it's actually pretty terrific. Some prime Spencer Tracy, lots of '30s newspaperman-ese, and a nice turn of an ending. Jimmy plays "Shorty" (get the joke?), a reporter, and he is his usual entertaining self.

Plenty of space on the DVR. I'll record some, and watch some live.

  15. Wow, I need to try and check this out. Missed out on those earlier today, but it's really some (any) of his more obscure output in the 50's and 60's (or even 70's) that I'd more up for.

Looking like it will be more or less chronological for the first 4 Wednesdays, with the 5th being all Westerns (which covers a lot of the later films).

Jimmy Stewart was/is a true American icon the likes of which I doubt we will ever see again.

I love Jimmy and his body of work as well as his humanity and courage.

You have a ton of great movies still to see then. Since you've seen 2 of the 3 movies Jimmy did with Frank Capra ("Mr. Smith" and "IAWL"), I'd suggest seeking out the third - "You Can't Take It With You". Many familiar faces from the other 2 movies - Lionel Barrymore (Old Man Potter), HB Warner (Mr Gower & The Senate Majority Leader), Samuel Hinds (Pa Bailey), Edward Arnold (Jim Taylor in Mr Smith) and of course Jean Arthur starring across from Jimmy again.
