    You beat me to it!

When the Beatles Anthology first aired in 1995, my mother taped it off TV for me (I was born in 1987, that's my excuse). And I used to watch it over and over again. As it was taped off TV, I saw all of the commercials a bunch too. I distinctly remember this being one of the commercials they aired.

Pat mAcDonald, once half of Timbuk 3, was allegedly offered $500,000 by McDonalds for the use of his best known song, The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades.

He said not at any price.

Maybe if the Raiders ( and the Beatles for that matter) had sold more of their songs for commercials, the could have at least afforded to purchase a 50 Star flag, instead of these 48 star versions that were outdated for at least 5 years before the photo was shot.

Valenti sold the rights to the song somewhere along the line...I'm not sure if his estate ever recovered ownership. I really like the version by H.P. Lovecraft, also the We Five did an early cover of it.

Normally, songs used in ads do not bother me; this time, it did.

On the contrary. The great part about being American is having the freedom to respect companies which embrace consciousness with Capitalism and to dislike those who don't. There is nothing wrong with our Capitalist system . It all comes down to how special interest lobbyists influence and control Congress. For KFC, their targeted demographic is both ethnic minorities and low income earners. When used in a commercial for this company, the message of Jesse Colin Young's song loses meaning. The lyrics are simplified and reduced to the image of people coming together at a KFC for the best interest of the people. Having customers eating junk food and being manipulated by a company's ads is not going to solve many societal problems. Sure, it will create jobs in foodservice and healthcare, but that's about it. I believe that Jesse Colin Young's messages of freedom and equality should encourage us to ask questions and separate right from wrong, instead of blindly accepting everything we're told by ads.

The message of the song "Get Together" written by Dino Valenti and popularized by the Youngbloods with Jesse Colin Young has a different meaning today than when it was released. For the most part, Children of the 1990's and prior have been raised by those of the 'hippie' generation and the later fringes. Not to turn this into a discussion of racism, but there is much less racial inequality today than back in the mid 1960's. Differences in skin color is not perceived as it was back then.

Well, the Beatles' "Revolution" was so politically namby pamby that it could probably have been co-opted by "the man" to sell Alka-Seltzer in 1968. By the way, I came across something cool on the internets....a high school (in Fulton County, GA if the web address is any indication) history lesson using the lyrics of that song.
