I've received the SEARCHERS master tapes from London today...

Now I have to sort through them to find the versions I need for the upcoming Audio Fidelity SACD compilation.

How many of you would freak out if I used some mono mixes instead of all stereo?

Go for the one that rocks. I'll trust your judgement. If the two versions are close: stereo.

Great news. I've always wanted to upgrade my Searchers.

Me personally, I would be most interested in hearing the mixes that YOU preferred, regardless of their mono or stereo nature.

What John said... This should be fun - I'm totally new to the Searchers (a Rhino LP comp, which I've only casually listened to).

Yow, I'd **love** the monos.... :D

I picked up a copy of the Pye 12" 45RPM EP from the late 70s that has their major hits on it, and I think **that's** great, so a CD would be really welcome!!

Besides-- there's not enough properly mastered mono "beat music" on CD anyway!!

    C'mon, Steve, STEREO, please!!!!

We've had enough mono crap over the years. This group was recorded well, they sound nice in stereo.

No we will not let this devolve into a MONO/STEREO issue guys, right?

Let's be happy that the man has made his announcement. We obviously dig his take on things in the mastering dept. so let's leave him to his job. Nothing is crap unless it is crappy sounding.

Let's be happy that he is doing this compilation. It'll be alright. Steve is no dummy - he'll choose the monos that rock and the stereos that roll!

So even though I praise the mono I own a stereo y'know!

Whatever sounds best. I'm not picky as to the mono/stereo thing. I just want the best.

    I think we're all split on the Mono/Stereo thing. It's a given.

I'd say Stereo unless the MONO version really kicks up some major surprises...!

    syd,

Steve does want our opinions here. We influenced the track selection for the Zombies after a similar thread.

No preference. Just weave your magic on the ones you prefer. I'm sure if you like it, I'll like it. I've got a mono switch on the preamp and I can activate this from the remote. It's not an issue.

I rarely listen for the stereo imaging these days, and do a lot of listening off-axis.

    Regards,
    Geoff

That would certainly settle the argument but I'll love the Searchers in any mode that Steve decides will best recapture those great days of the British Invasion. Damn, I miss those days. It's got me sitting on needles and pins, I'll tellya.

Steve, how do recording companies overseas send over their tapes to be worked on here? Did Castle send somebody in person to hand-carry them, or merely rely on FedUPS? Just curious.

You'll have to work really hard to improve on the sound quality of the Silvertone Searchers' DVD-A!*

    *A joke.

    Steve,

The monos are considered by many(including me)to be the definitive versions. I say, do what you need to do. Your judgement is sound. The winners will be we, the listeners!

BTW, how is the overall condition of the tapes? Almost 40 years old, y'know.

I would go with the stereo, their stereo mixes are quite good. IMHO! But, I trust Steve's ears and opinion.

Ed Bishop Incredibly, I'm still here

Basically, I'm agreed with Rob and John, but a few mono's that, IMO, beat the stereo:

    1. Ain't That Just Like Me
    2. Needles And Pins
    3. Someday We're Gonna Love Again
    4. Don't Throw Your Love Away
    5. Goodbye My Love
    6. Take Me For What I'm Worth

These would, for me, be preferable in mono; after that(going only by memory at the moment), stereo would be fine.

    You did ask....;)
