If the 4 CD set is among your favorite Oscar, I'd say that the "lost" CD is worth seeking out. Agree with what you've said about being worn out by him after a while. I usually sense an overall "meh" about him (sort of the same when it comes to Brubeck) from the general jazz community. But, there's no questioning his high level of musicianship. Does anyone really think that Ray Brown would have played with Oscar for so long had that musicianship not been there? I think part of the problem was that Oscar (as with Ella) let his career be primarily guided by Norman Granz. While that's not necessarily a bad thing, placing oneself in similar recording/touring situations over and over again leads to little variety. Stan Meets Oscar, Ben Meets Oscar, Prez Meets Oscar, Hawk and Oscar...........Rinse, lather, repeat :)

[IMG]Just getting into these, and they both sound very good. As somebody who records from time to time, I love the diagram of the session in the big 4's liner notes; and the reason I bit on the color of soil is because it is touted as being recorded directly to two tracks (which is kind of what I do), and that title sounds superb...

I am going back in for a second listen :)

Geez, must be nice. All we got in Modern Drummer were those pull-out flexi-discs::mad:

Listened to the Kawaguchi twice last night, one of the titles I did receive. Excellent session IMO. George gets going on those double kicks on one of his solos and all I could hear was: "Do what you like, do what you like.....". I trust I don;t have to explain.:)

Nope, thank gawd, he's playing and trading "eighths" and various subdivisions thereof. And maybe that "subdivisions" mention was intended.

I really dig his solo piano outings much more than his piano standards.

This is such a clean and straight forward album. I sometimes play it REALLY loud and it gives me a live feeling. Max Roach drums are all over the place when played loud.
Or, like today, I turn the volume down low and let it flow. It's funny how you can enjoy a good jazz album in different ways just by changing the volume slightly...

I'm not using any anti-skate, and have found no ill effects during playback

I've had more of a noticeable change in my vinyl setup after changing tubes in my preamp from stock tubes to Telefunken ribbed plates
and RCA black plates (hello midrange!)

As good as the duets with Crispell and especially compelling when they match each other line for line:
