I bought the cd release when it came out, never have seen the two lp set even though I was a Jarrett fan when it was released as I loved the work he did with Miles, and then followed him to ECM. Good stuff.

I've been digging into the Complete Brubeck on Columbia Box set. I listened to Time Out, Time Further Out, Time In, and Countdown: Time In Outer Space.
Now moving on to Dave Digs Disney.

If you REALLY want to rectify that, get this:

    http://www.amazon.com/Cellar-Door-S...61154824&sr=1-1&keywords=cellar+door+sessions

Live Evil contains some edited pieces from the above which included John McLaughlin as a guest on one night, but this 6 cd set is the real ****e! Get Live Evil as well, since it contains some studio material too.

Btw, I agree with most of what you said above except for calling Jarrett "slow to develop". He was a piano prodigy at the age of 7, and by the time he played with Miles in 1970, had already been a star on on "rock" circuit with Charles Lloyd's successful quartet including Jack DeJohnette.

Was released here in the States as a single cd. I ultimately purchased a Japanese mini lp version which contained 2 cd's.

Good stuff. I can't think of one bad record that's ever been recorded live at the VV.

    Thanks for the rec. :righton:

As for Jarrett being slow to develop, I'll take your words on that as I haven't yet heard his earlier work as sideman and leader (and on three different labels!). I knew he was a child prodigy, but Chick Corea released what is widely considered his breakthrough album Now He Sings, Now He Sobs at the age of 27, the same age as Jarrett was when he released Expectations, and although no more technically impressive (though it is an amazing album in its own right) it strikes me as being a more mature and unified statement, as do several of Herbie Hancock's solo albums from when he was younger.

    You're welcome!

Things don't always line up that neatly, especially in music. Jarrett was already recording as a leader in the late 60s (trio recordings on Atlantic/Vortex) with the Haden/Motian rhythm team, and was well on his way to becoming a prolific composer and big-time band leader (see both the American and European Quartets). Whatever you choose to search out, enjoy the journey!

Just listening to this very fine album for the first time in a while:

Deservedly acclaimed and popular, it has this relaxing, unassuming, and predominantly melancholy vibe that often recalls Getz/Gilberto the year before with its influence of latin and bossa nova rhythms, but more varied with a harder bop edge, exemplified in the classic title track and the beautifully dreamy but no less catchy Que Pasa with its haunting outro. Although I wouldn't consider Horace Silver as among the great jazz virtuosos, that hardly matters; Song for My Father is a great example of an album that values pure musicality, subtle jazz feeling and a tight group ethic over showmanship.

Sadly, this is still the only Horace Silver album I own. Anyone got any favourites/further recommendations?
