great to hear all the positives about these releases, bit surprised by some of the surprise displayed tho'.
exactly what where you expecting from Grundman? all of his previous work on Hendrix has been first rate.

He's just doing the job asked of him. If the label wants it squashed, they will do so - regardless of who the mastering engineer is.

I was thinking about this issue today and you could make a case for lifting just the live tracks from Purple Box and making that a live chrono album. It would be very strong!

I just got home from work and checked my vinyl copy of Band of Gypsys. There's nothing on the album that indicates it was pressed anywhere other than the US (although I suppose it's possible). The album was issued in 1997 as MCA-11607. Below I've pasted the information from the albums listing as it appears on Discogs. [Edit] I just noticed that the Discogs listing states the album as being released in Europe rather than the US. Although the listing on RYM shows an American Flag next the album number.

an element of truth for sure, the mastering engineer never calls the shots, or do they?

again, why the surprise here. Grundmans record [pardon the pun] regard Hendrix is exemplary.

I'm not sure what happened when the first round of Experience Hendrix releases came out in 1997, maybe some kind of deal was made and it came out on MCA for that release, but I would think that a US pressing in that case would have some kind of "licenced from Capitol" thing on it. (Sorry for leading things off topic...)

Thanks for the head's up about Bull Moose - just ordered both cds for less than $20 shipped. No Best Buys close to me had them in stock. Normally I would have passed on these but all the positive reviews about the sound swayed me over. Looking forward to them, plus I LIKE jewel cases! I heard these a lot back in the day when they came out and they were always great collections, imho. I used to play my 8-track of Cry Of Love in my car a lot!

my test press of MCA 11607 was pressed in the US if that helps, not keeping up with the many side issues being posted in this thread.

It is interesting because IIRC, the CD reissue of BOG in the U.S. did not come out until 1998 and it was on EH/Capitol. Not sure why a U.S. vinyl edition reissue back then would have predated the CD reissue, particularly at a time when EH was trying to establish its own blueprint for the catalogue.

Sorry Gordon, we tend to get excited about these releases and the threads tend to morph into All Things Hendrix!

But in our defense, it's not like there are six active threads on page one every single day like there are a certain forum fave.

OT, picked up the new releases on the way home from work. Need to pour a beverage and fire up the stereo!

    'West/Red':
i always thought he was struggling w/this performance/rendition as well; always thought is was the guitar. Start & finish, i think he catches on 'fire' in the mid tho.
[have no facts at all too back that up/just what i saw-see & what i heard-hear/luv this 'concert'/super happy too have it on DVD/SQ LPCM & VQ B&W video tho/BIG time]

i've read the entire thread [& entirely postED way too much on it as well]; as soon as Grundman was mentioned here, posts became much more positive overall. For the releases & him especially.
[your ALWAYS gonna have haters/don't know why some people post a 'why are people hating on anything' thread here or anywhere/"Haters Gonna Hate"]

    It does indeed!

But does it bug anyone else that this is a Michael Jeffrey lame title to try and tie in with the Hawaiian film? According to McDermott's Ultimate book, Jimi called this song "Slow Part".

I think it's one of the best Hendrix titles (and songs) ever. But then again I've tripped on top of the pali before so your mileage may vary.

He mastered PHA and Miami Pop for CD, prior to these two titles. I didn't find anything special sound quality wise on those first two. So yes, it is a surprise- IMO.

It's not officially available. I am not sure if it has been bootlegged or not.
