RIP. But how old could he have been on the Ed Sullivan show, 16?

...and the anniversary of Holly's death was the 3rd, 56 yrs ago. Did not realize Joe worked at Gold Star in its heyday.

Maudlin was born in July 1940. So he would have been 17 when the Crickets first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in December 1957.

In fact, Joe (born July 8, 1940) was 1 day younger than Ringo Starr (born July 7, 1940). How about that?

Yikes. 17 and playing on Ed Sullivan.

After working with Buddy, I think he engineered at Gold Star , so he probably had some great stories to tell.

Think about how old most of the young up & coming stars were. Bizarre to look back and realize how many were 17-18 to about 20-21. Just kids really.

I've always wondered why people looked so much older than their actual age in the '50s.

Look at Joe in that photo. He could have passed for a guy in his 40s.

    I agree.

For example, when the Beatles Please Please Me album was released George Harrison was the ripe old age of....20.:p
He had already been playing in Hamburg a couple of times , was getting mobbed by girls and becoming world famous. I think he handled it all pretty well all things considered.

Elvis Presley was rocking the world in 1955 at...20 also.
Peter Noone fronted Hermans Hermits at 15 and Stevie Winwood was a pup also, but....
    back to Joe. RIP.

The hair and the suits, that's what did it--especially the hair.

    RIP, Joe.

RIP to a real rock 'n' roll star. Saw him twice with Jerry and Sonny within the last decade. Such a joy to watch him play. So much genuine enthusiasm.

Joe would have been 18 when they did the Sullivan show... This is confirmed by Buddy Holly's own answer to Ed's question of "How old are you fellas? to which Buddy replies "We have two that are 18, one 20, and I'm 21..."

Myke Trying Not To Spook The Horse

I've been trying to figure out all day if this is the same gentleman that a past coworker spoke to me about, a couple of years ago.
All day, " Nashville," has been listed as his " adopted home," but that's been common for decades now. She commuted in from Hickman County everyday, and when we spoke, she said the man was a former Cricket, was active in their church, and was just a really great, funny, considerate guy. May be the same man.

I want to (sort of) correct myself... There's Buddy's statement about their ages, and the RRHOF lists his birth date as 1939 (https://rockhall.com/inductees/the-crickets/bio/), both of which would indicate that Joe B. was 18 on their first Sullivan show appearance... *But*, there's an interview where Joe B. states his birth year as 1940 (http://www.buddyhollyarchives.com/2...ts-finally-get-their-due-a-glimpse-into-past/), so I'd have to go along with 1940 as the year of birth: I can't see Joe lying about his birth date...
