It's an introductory career spanning compilation for the casual fan, this time including both bands, no need to analyse it too much.

Buy if you like, or don't.

"Iconic" here seems to mean "not very good".

Lol, this cover is art directed by the great Peter Saville, like every other cover by JD/NO. Obviously no accounting for taste, but for what it is (again, an introductory collection) I would say he made another great cover, especially in the context of early 2010's dime-a-dozen "best of" compilations. The Guardian put out a great gallery when this comp came out with his process and thoughts behind some of his work for the two bands, including this one:

“I realized this was a record that would be sold in supermarkets and advertised on television. So the cover has a ‘pile it high, sell it cheap’ aesthetic. As you open it out, it says ‘Total’, but folded up you just see the ‘O’s. It says, ‘From Joy Division to New Order’. I couldn’t bear the words ‘Best of’. It’s a long way from the independent record shop to Tesco, almost 33 years. At Factory, I had a freedom that was unprecedented in communications design. We lived out an ideal, without business calling the shots. It was a phenomenon”

Plus, I like the Bradbury Thompson CMYK aesthetic, which plays on the whole "commercial" aspect of the comp — he's clearly in on the joke of how "mainstream" this all is.

The re-press that came out of Joy Division's Substance comp was amazing. I had the original single lp that had half the songs, but the 2lp repress not only includes everything on the wonderful double cassette I grew up listening to, but added even more bonus tracks (As You Said and another version of LWTUA). That's how you a reissue!

I think the music is very powerful and translates well generation to generation. I've always felt Joy Division was a very non-commercial sort of vibe, the fact it has become so commercial speaks to the times we live in I suppose.
I feel the artistic qualities of both bands, I love how they transformed into electronics but am somewhat frustrated at it reaching a stagnancy. MHO of course.

Well, if you missed the Singles box, which is quite expensive now, then maybe you can justify this one for the single edits of some songs. Its a decent tracklist if you are in the mood for a mixtape, except for the last couple of songs. I would have prefer Here to Stay instead of one of those.

don't forget collectors. i'm going to buy it, and throw in the pile with other new order
compilations. i never open them, or play them. they're just to be somewhat 'complete'.

personally, anything and everything is fair game for me when it comes to new order.

i have the 94 best of on cd, vinyl, cassette, etc, etc.

even have the japanese video laserdisc compilations..

I just picked this up locally at Waterloo in Austin. Did this not get wide distribution in the US? Amazon has a January release date. All the ebay sellers seem to be from the UK. Glad I checked Waterloo for it.
