Rex Ingram? He co-directed the 1925 Ben-Hur and gave Rudolph Valentino one of his first major roles. When acting, he was usually credited as "Rex Hitchcock" to avoid confusion with the other Rex Ingram.

Ken's got it! Guest AND winner in his own thread! I'll let him decide his own prize.

I picked Rex because De Mille's The King of Kings has been released on DVD, and in DVD Savant's review of it he makes the Rex/Rex mistake by saying that director Rex Ingram was among the cast--when he means the OTHER rex Ingram.

Well, someone's got to take a guess to get to a clue, so I'll say Robert Aldrich even though I know it's wrong.

Nope. I think I used both Robert Aldrich and Stanley Kramer before, though. Here's a clue: He was born in suburban Chicago.

Nope & Nope. Clue #2: He enjoyed much commercial success in the 50s and 60s, but was only nominated for an Oscar once.

I thought it might be Nicholas Ray, but he was born in Wisconsin, and attended University of Chicago (thank you Google for the info!)

I guess we can rule out John Hughes and David Mamet too, heh heh.

I considered Sturges, but if it's him, he's kinda long in the tooth by then....

It is indeed John Sturges. The image is from an on-set publicity shot of Sturges directing Donald Pleasance in "The Hallelujah Trail". Sturges worked with Spencer Tracy, Donald Pleasance, and Steve McQueen three times each, and Charles Bronson five times. He made some really good films, but always had a light stylistic touch with strong compositions which never really connected with the "auteurist" movement in film criticism, but frequently connected with audiences. "Bad Day at Black Rock" is my personal favorite, but "The Magnificent Seven", "The Great Escape", and "Gunfight at the OK Corral" are all popular favorites.

HTom's no-prize should be clearing Canadian customs in a couple of days. :)

I should have known. One of the books I edited a few years back was about the making of the movie "Le Mans", where Sturges played a big role--until he got so fed up with problems surrounding the picture that he walked off the set without informing McQueen and never came back. Sturges's "Bad Day at Black Rock" is one of my favorite films.

Sr. or Jr.? I'm kidding, but this was over so quick that I was looking for some way to drag it out. It is indeed, Gordon Parks (Sr.), director of "The Learning Tree" and "Shaft". He is a multi-hyphenate in that he has written novels, directed films, co-founded a magazine, and worked as a photographer over the years. The picture I used was actually from Meters' bass player George Porter's web site.

I'll polish up that no-prize and get it in the mail to Ed.
