    Nope.

First hint: He is British, but is best known for directing Hollywood films.

None of the above. Since I am a couple of clues behind, I'll drop a big one. He directed the only film in history to win a Best Picture Oscar without being even nominated in any other Oscar category.

John's "no-prize" is in the mail.

Modern viewers may not realize it, but "Grand Hotel" was groundbreaking at its time for breaking the prevalent "one star one picture" mold at Hollywood studios in the early 30s with its large ensemble of name actors.

Besides "Grand Hotel", Goulding's best known works at MGM are probably his successful collaborations with Bette Davis such as "Dark Victory" and "The Old Maid". Later in his career at Fox, he made "The Razor's Edge" and the gritty noir "Nightmare Alley", both with Tyrone Power.

He also carved out a secondary career as a fairly successful composer of popular songs in the 40s. "Mam'selle", for instance, has been recorded by Frank Sinatra (at least twice), Frankie Laine, Dean Martin, Art Lund, Johnny Hartman, etc.

    Regards,

I think the quick bio I read said he started out as a child actor or some such on the London stage. Quite a varied and impressive career.

Goulding's "Nightmare Alley" is real good! A dark story about carnival scam artists. It features one of my favorite lines, "What makes a man want to be a geek?"
