When he turned 98, the Huffington Post listed his 12 favourite films, which we subsequently blogged and to which we added another ten. To celebrate his 99th birthday the British Film Institute listed its 1o favourite Douglas movies - naturally with some overlap.

We've listed our ten on the blog too: Lonely Are the Brave, Paths of Glory, Out of Our Past (the quintessential film noir), Spartacus, Posse (directed by our man and described by the late Philip French as a Nixonian Western, with Douglas in the Tricky Dicky-type role and also starring the hugely undervalued Bruce Dern), Seven Days in May, Ace in the Hole, Champion, Last Train from Gun Hill, The Bad and the Beautiful.

Happy birthday, Mr Douglas. Cool as hell. Even when he was a bad guy.

For a fulsome recap and all three lists see http://fridaynightboys300.blogspot.co.uk/2015/12/happy-99th-birthday-to-kirk-douglas.html

  5. Who do you think got more women when they we're younger, Kirk or Michael?

I'm going with Michael, but I bet the atmosphere was all class when Kirk was on the prowl.

One of my all-time favorite actors. I hope he can remain in decent health and add a few more years to his lifespan!

"The Vikings" is one of my favorite movies. Kirk and Ernest Borgnine kicked butt.

Good actor, but I can't get past the Natalie Wood thing. Anyway he's had a great life, 99 is certainly a ripe old age.

I always loved Ace in the Hole aka The Big Carnival. Bitter, dark, powerful.

The beard Douglas grew to play Van Gogh was shaved off by Perry Como on TV.

Didn't know about that. Seriously. Hope it's not true. I'll have to take my 'cool as hell' comment back.
