I'm looking into upgrading speakers in a 2 channel setup, anyone have any experience with the Legacy speakers... Focus, Signature or Classic models?

Thats a good reco from SH :righton: I checked out the whispers before I ordered my Reimer speakers. I suggest you check em out, priced very reasonable and GREAT sounding. Plus they are made here in the good ol US of A too. IMHO more bang for the buck, but, Legacy's are real good too. Just a bit more $$$ for the bang IMO. :goodie:

Thanks for the reply Steve and Smilin. There's only a couple places in S Florida where I live where I could audition the speakers. I'm hoping to get around to doing this on the near future.

I think you'll find the Classic is a great rock speaker - very detailed with lots of true, deep bass. Quite different than the warmer acoustic-suspension models I've owned in the past (each have their strong points). Anyway the Focus is also a terrific speaker (larger than the Classic as you probably know), but if you can't afford those, the Classic can generate lots of great sound.

I also have Legacy Focus speakers, and think that they sound excellent with any music that I've thrown at them. They can definitely rock whenever necessary.

I have the Legacy Focus for over 10 years. I have changed/upgraded EVERYTHING in my system during that time EXCEPT the Legacy's. I LOVE them, they are fantastic speakers, Worth every penny.

I believe that Tom Port at dccblowout is a big fan of the Legacy Whispers, which IIRC he has modified in some way.

Although I listen to mostly rock, the Classics really shine on Classical Music. They are well-rounded speakers. I've had mine since '99, and when my priorities change, I'll upgrade to the Focus to gain that second midbass driver and the larger woofers.

I've had a pair of Focus speakers for six years. I really like 'em. They sound good on all types of music and are capable of tight, deep, and powerful bass. I have them powered at 500 watts each.

I was really close to buying a pair. Very close. Bought my Totem Winds instead but it was almost a toss up.

I agree, Cliff - and I do the same (listen to classical, but mostly rock/pop). I mentioned they're noted as a particularly good rock speaker because they have that "reputation." But yes, they're fine on other types of music as well.

    ultron9,

Since you're running a B&K amp, you'll have no problems. But others be warned, the Focus is NOT a tube friendly speaker.

Boy, I totally disagree. I've run from 10 to 120 tube watts on mine from amps by VAC, Cary, Wavac, McIntosh, Marantz, Grover Custom and they all sounded great. The difference was in dynamic drive. I needed about 40 watts or more to get the correct dynamic range. Since they were in a small room (way too small, actually) it might have helped. In a big ol' room anything under 100 watts might not have been enough.

It was when I tried a high power solid state amp on my Focus speakers that things went to hell; midrange got hard, top end dried out, etc.

    To each his own I guess. It's always a trade-off. :)

Run an impedance curve. If the speakers harden up with SS driving them, it's because that is how they sound when the bottom end has some damping.

I disagree also; I use mine with a VAC Avatar SE integrated tube amplifer, running at 60 watts per channel, and it sounds wonderful to me.

I disagree, also. I 've run many tube amps from HK, Marantz, Fisher, Mcintosh and they all sounded great. Some had more "drive" than others but they all sounded great.

What kind of solid state amp did you use?

Several actually. Sorry, no names. Let's not start a toobz vs. solid state thing here though. Separate thread for that.
