    Pixies
    Bauhaus
    The Sisters Of Mercy
    Bauhaus
    Metallica
    Hanoi Rocks
    The Smiths
    Depeche Mode
    Yngwie Malmsteen
    Big Black

I don't really know how to approach this because I can list hundreds of metal bands that I love as well as stuff that span all sorts of genres. I don't associate the 80s with only bands that fit in the "college rock" or "alternative" sound.

    Name your top 10.
Lots of people associate the 80's with metal bands (for better or worse). It was one of the defining musical facts of the decade.

I'm limiting myself to bands whose first release came out in the 80s, so no pure punk leftovers for me, or (quint)essential 80s acts like Prince. Here are the first ones that sprang to mind:

    Public Enemy
    The Blue Aeroplanes
    That Petrol Emotion
    R.E.M.
Laughing Clowns / Ed Kuepper solo
    Tall Dwarfs
    Blam Blam Blam
    Husker Du
Bilders / Builders / Bill Direen
    The House of Love
    The The

Plus a handful who kind of bend the rules:
The Triffids (first self-released cassette in 1978; first commercial release on a label in 1981; debut album proper didn't arrive until 1983)
The Teardrop Explodes / Julian Cope solo (first Teardrops album in 1980, but a couple of singles were released in 1979 - but I'd be more than happy to limit it to his solo output in that decade)
Kirsty MacColl (first single in 1979; first album in 1981)
Robyn Hitchcock with and without the Egyptians (solo career kicks off in 1981, but this ignores the Soft Boys - though I suppose I'm also ignoring the Saints for Ed Kuepper above)

There must be an entire generation that considers Queen, Aerosmith, and ZZ Top 80's bands, though IMO by Dec. 31, 1979, the best of all three was already behind them.
