I have not bought a single classical LP in close to 30 years and my 4000 some classical LP's all have their original labels ...
May I ask, please, what stations you are dialed into? I'm about mid-way between NY and Philly and I can't pick up anything (don't get good cell phone coverage here either).
First listen to CD 2 of "Weihnachtsmusik In Der Renaissance" performed by the Tolzer Knabenchor on DHM. From "Baroque Christmas Edition" on DHM Featuring: Elly Ameling Bernhard Michaelis
WRTI- 90.1FM. I'm in Bucks County, maybe 30 miles out of Philly. It comes in pretty well with just a generic plastic dipole antenna. I know Frenchtown pretty well. If you're north of there, it may be a bit out of range without a good rooftop antenna.
New arrival - "Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No. 2 / Paganini Rhapsody" performed by Anna Vinnitskaya with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra led by Krzystof Urbanski on Alpha.
Now playing CD1 from the following box, which arrived yesterday for a first listen ... This box actually includes the remastered recordings from the following 2 Philips LP sets I bought some thirty years ago. Margaret Marshall had a great voice ...
Prokofiev Piano Sonata 6, live recording by Richter from 1966. Blistering performance from the Melodiya Anniversary set, CD 11. Probably my favorite of the Prokofiev piano sonatas after the 7th.
Another new arrival - "Bach Unlimited" performed by Lise De La Salle on Naive. Works by: Bach, Poulenc, Roussel, Liszt and Enhco
Biggest snow here in my lifetime was 10.2 inches on Dec.31, 1963/ Jan. 1, 1964. Much more usual to get an inch or two or just a dusting. We also get the kind of wet snows that pile up 3-4 inches & then melt the next day.
This is my first ever experience with this music. Disc 2 playing at the moment; various Violin and Oboe sonatas. Does anyone have releases of these works they particularly treasure?
Now listening to "Britten - A Ceremony of Carols/Friday Afternoons/Three Two-part Songs" performed by the New London Children's Choir led by Ronald Corp on Naxos.
Beethoven, L von. Piano concerto No.5 etc Berlin P.O. cond Leitner with the amazing Kempff on the ivory 1962/4 (r)1987 DG Galleria 419 468-2 Coupled with Piano sonata No.32 on the cd a favourite of mine I'm listening to tryin' to stay warm.
Of the Handel Violin Sonatas (Op.1), my favorite recording is this 1966 Philips release, with Arthur Grumiaux, violin, with Robert Veyron-Lacriox, harpsichord. Not sure if these are on your CD set, though.
Thank you for the recommendation. Grumiaux. That's a name to conjure with. The CD I have is a 1991 release by L'ecole d'Orphee a one-off/ loose collaboration headed by violinist John Holloway. Philip Pickett plays recorder. I bought it partly because I really like Pickett's crossover work with my folk-rock hero Richard Thompson on the album 'The Bones of All Men' pictured below.
First listen to "On Christmas Night" performed by the Choir Of Merton College, Oxford directed by Benjamin Nicholas on BBC Music.
Villa-Lobos: the complete string quartets Cuarteto Latinamericano Finally exploring this 6 disc and single DVD set, which includes all 17 quartets by the Brazilian master today. Disc 1 is impressive, including his first, last and probably most accessible (No. 6) quartet. Here's a clip of the ensemble performing g the 3rd movement from No. 5:
