I'll have to check for this one. I really dig Rafael Barata'a drumming. Will be seeing him play in a couple of weeks. Stoked.
After many years this got a play last night. Lush Life was one of our favorite dinner spins a long time ago during the 'young family years in the Shire'. Never has it sounded better and Wynton Marsalis kept catching my ear... he was nailing it the whole way through. redbook disc:
Hal Galper – Now Hear This (Enja Records) — Hal Galper - piano; Terumasa Hino - trumpet; Cecil McBee - bass; Tony Williams - drums. Remixed & remastered from the original 8-track masters by Thorsten Scheffner in 2006. Also includes one bonus alternate take.
John Escreet – Sound, Space and Structures (Sunnyside Records) — John Escreet - piano; Evan Parker - tenor & soprano saxophone; John Hébert - bass; Tyshawn Sorey - drums Very nice.
Thanks for this, as a Tony Williams obsessive I'm going to check this out as soon as I get the chance.
I still don't know why this is considered such a fantastic audio recording but it's nice. Disc 3 from the 30th Anniversary 4 disc set (3 SACD, 1 DVD).
Thelonious Monk - Les Liaisons Dangereuses 1960 HDTracks 24/96 Thelonious Monk, piano Charlie Rouse, tenor saxophone Barney Wilen, tenor saxophone Sam Jones, bass Art Taylor, drums
I've never bothered checking it out, even for free via the usual methods. Through the years the focus has always been the sound quality and little have I learned about the actual content which has been a red flag for me
WP Brubeck & Desmond - The Duets 1976(Horizon) lp NP Keith Jarrett - Sun Bear (ECM) Japanese vinyl Record V.
I'm a fan of Swedish jazz and this is fine music, not earth-shattering but well-played, sincere, fun. Worth checking out. I got this four disc set for something like 30 dollars, so that's where I came in on it. Sound is decent, it's just not show stopper like some seem to infer.
Is it fair to say it’s the audiophile jazz reference for people who don’t seem to listen to much jazz? I have almost never seen jazzbos rate this record highly—only audiophiles.
My favorite Chet Baker album. I also like this vocal stuff, though. Also, both your Keepnews and the old OJC CD sound A LOT better than the oop and now overpriced AP SACD.
Back in the 70s, this album could be found in every single High-End studio all over the world. It was one of the standard reference works to show off audiophile equipment. It‘s played well, but it mainly consists of Jazz and pop standards, from Louis Armstrong to Dave Brubeck to Over the Rainbow. More a mass-market than a jazzbo favorite. Nothing wrong about that, but there‘s so much more interesting stuff out there, that I hardly play this one. As a collector, I‘d buy the FIM release if it‘s cheap enough. As a music lover I could perfecty live without this one. (Note to self: Move 3+1 box to For Sale pile.)
NP: The Doors - The Soft Parade AP SACD Needless to say that this is not their greatest album, but still worth having.
Saw Joe's name and needed to listen to "Lazy Afternoon", one of the great song on: Joe Henderson - Power To The People, 1969 (Personal favorite track: "Black Narcissus") You can see a rhythm section like this one from Miles away: Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette.
There are two moments on the recording that get me everything even after decades of hearing it. 1. Bill Evans playing that locked hands intro to On Green Dolphin Street. 2. The way Cannonball starts his solo on Love For Sale and then the whole band starts swinging it's ass off.
Agreed. This was a great session. Right now Joe Lovano "I'm All For You" (with Hank Jones) Blue Note CD
Love this. I'm All For You, and the subsequent Joyous Encounter, were not only great dates but also great sounding recordings -- for anyone who hasn't heard them. Also from around the same time and great and great sounding during Lovano's work with Hank Jones was that live set from J@LC.
NP: Lady Day, The Complete Billie Holiday On Columbia (Disc 7) I used to have a CD that had most of the tracks from disc 7 of this set, but when I went to play it last week it was nowhere to be found. I played that disc a lot back in the day and the versions it has of a lot of those tunes have come to be the quintessential versions for me (e.g. “I Cover the Waterfront”, haven’t heard a version yet I like better). I’d always wanted to get this box set so replacing the missing the tunes by picking up the entire set seemed logical, especially considering the price of the box (I was expecting just a box w/some CDs in it, like the Weather Report box, so I was pleasantly surprised by the actual packaging and the book it included).
Well, I guess I need to find out what it‘s all about. $1.99 plus shipping on ebay seemed a moderate risk... ;-)
