We all know that CDs can hold a maximum of 80 minutes of music. But I was just curious what the longest actual CD you own is.... obviously we're going to talking differences of just a few seconds here, but it'll be interesting to see what single CD comes out on top.

One of the longest I can recall off the top of my head is Fleetwood Mac's The Dance, which clocks in at 79:16.

I'm almost positive I've got an album somewhere in my collection that is several seconds over the 80-minute mark, but I can't remember which one at the moment.

Elvis Costello's "Get Happy" on Ryko from the 90's was as long as you could get...

I think Metallica's "Load" from 96 is about as long as you can get as well.

At least it seems like the longest CD I own.....

But seriously, I have a Charley Patton CD on Yazoo that runs over 81:00. That's probably my longest, though I've made a few CD-R's that go over 81:00

One of the Grateful Dead Europe '72 discs clock in at exactly 80:00 (remastered edition)

    Dickie Goodman - Greatest Fables

81:33, although this is partially a product of the index seconds between tracks, as there is less than 80 minutes of true content.

It's a shame some recorders can't copy them.

Hopefully, the following isn't too OT. My Alesis Masterlink refused to copy a personal CD of mine I'd made on the Philips recorder I previously had, that ran 79.54. (The Philips would not make a disc longer than 79.57.) Lots of inter-track time trimming was required; it wasn't until the programme ran 79.42 that the Masterlink would make a new disc. (I wish I knew how to change that!)

It's my understanding anything beyond 79.57 or 79.59 (as some Tascam machines can do) requires recording into a 'run-out' zone on the disc, and can be injurious to some lasers for some reason.

Allegedly there are 90 minute CDR blanks somewhere, though I've never seen one or known where they are available. Perhaps the discs were dodgy, and no longer made by the time I found that information, a couple of years ago.

  10. Off the top of my head, the Patton CD is the longest I know of in my collection. I just got the "I'm Not There" soundtrack and noticed that disc one plays to 79:36.

That's one of the first ones that came to mind for me, too... but when I popped in the CD to check, it's actually only 78:59, so I knew I had longer albums elsewhere. ;)

Rykodisc issued a self-titled Mission Of Burma compilation (RDC 40072) in 1988 that clocks in at 80:06. At the time, I recall reading (somewhere) that it was the longest CD that had ever been released.

I'm actually surprised CD players of that era didn't have trouble playing it. My 2 year old car's CD player won't even play CDs over 74 minutes without skipping like crazy.

IIRC, Ryko mentioned this in ads. This was when albums like Blonde On Blonde were showing up on CD in abridged versions to run under 73 minutes.

    Wow - 86:54 for a redbook CD?? That's hard to believe. (But I believe you! :) )

I sorted the database of my music collection by "Total Time" field, and arrived at the following top 10 list of the longest CDs I own:

    1. Beethoven, Ludwig Van - Symphony No.3 & No.4, Karajan cond. (SACD) = 81:15
    2. Mission Of Burma - Mission Of Burma (Rykodisc) = 80:04
    3. Various Artists - Sounds Of The Seventies (Disc 2) = 79:58
    4. Sweet, Matthew - To Understand - The Early Recordings (1983-1989) = 79:54
    5. Various Artists - Man Of The World: Reflections On Peter Green (Audio Fidelity) (SACD) = 79:50 <-- Is this the longest single CD that Steve Hoffman has ever mastered?
    6. Kaiser, Henry & Wadada Leo Smith - Yo Miles! Upriver (SACD) (Disc 2) = 79:46
    7. Costello, Elvis And The Attractions - Goodbye Cruel World (Rhino 2004) (Disc 2) = 79:46
    8. Talking Heads - Once In A Lifetime Box Set (Disc 1) = 79:44
    9. Kirk, Roland - Domino (Verve Master Edition Series) = 79:44
    10. Byrne, David - The Knee Plays (2007 remaster) = 79:42

NOTE: The total times of any SACDs in the above list are for the redbook CD layer only. SACD layers have more capacity, but I'm not considering them for this thread which focuses on redbook CD.

Darn, I thought freedb would be more helpful to confirm your report, but freedb reports CD1 as being anywhere from just under 77 minutes to over 90 minutes . . .

    (77 minutes) http://www.freedb.org/freedb/rock/7e120419
    (90 minutes) http://www.freedb.org/freedb/rock/7d153819

I haven't found a freedb entry for CD2 yet. Their search engine ain't the best. :(

Ooops, I see what's going on. I actually did find both discs of Die Ärzte - Bäst Of on freedb . . . .

    The tracks listing is here:
    http://www.amazon.com/Bast-die-Ärzte-Die/dp/tracks/B000GIN4PO/ref=dp_tracks_all_1#disc_1

So this apparently is CD1 and clocks in at about 90 minutes:
    (90 minutes) http://www.freedb.org/freedb/rock/7d153819

The freedb entries threw me off because both are reported as having 25 tracks, but only CD1 has 25 tracks according to Amazon.com. CD2 has 37 tracks but freedb says it only has 25 (maybe the last 13 tracks are actually indexed within track 25?).
